لايَكُونُ حازِماً مَنْ لايَجُودُ بِما في يَدِهِ، ولايُؤَخِّرُ (وَلا يَدَّخِرُ)عَمَلَ يَوْمِهِ إلى غَدِهِ۔
He who does not give generously from what he has and does not advance (or save) his work of today for his morrow is not a judicious person.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Judicious)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of generosity and planning for the future. Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.
The word (haziman) "حازِماً" in the Hadith refers to someone who is judicious, wise, and prudent in their actions. This person possesses the ability to make sound decisions and exercise self-control. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the qualities of a true believer who understands the significance of generosity and planning for the future.
The word (jood) "جُودُ" means to give generously or to be generous. It encompasses the act of giving freely and abundantly, without hesitation or reluctance. This act of generosity is not limited to material possessions, but also includes giving of one's time, knowledge, and resources for the benefit of others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages us to be generous in the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261:
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
The phrase (layu'akhkhiru (wala yaddakhiru)
لايُؤَخِّرُ (وَلا يَدَّخِرُ)عَمَلَ يَوْمِهِ إلى غَدِهِ
'amala yawmihi ila ghadihi) means not to delay or save one's work of today for tomorrow. It emphasizes the importance of taking action in the present and not procrastinating. This does not mean that we should not plan for the future, but rather that we should not delay fulfilling our obligations and responsibilities. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran in Surah Al-Isra, verse 36:
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that a true believer is one who is judicious in their actions, giving generously from what they have been blessed with, and planning for the future while fulfilling their obligations in the present. This Hadith encourages us to be proactive in our approach to life, to seize opportunities to do good, and to be mindful of our responsibilities towards ourselves and others.
By being generous, we not only benefit those in need, but we also purify our own souls and increase our blessings. By planning for the future, we ensure that we are prepared for any challenges that may come our way and that we are able to fulfill our obligations effectively. This Hadith reminds us of the importance of balancing our present actions with future planning, as both are essential for a successful and fulfilling life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the virtues of generosity and planning for the future. It reminds us to be judicious in our actions, to give generously from what we have been blessed with, and to fulfill our obligations in the present while preparing for the future. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and ability to embody these qualities in our lives.
