ما أقْبَحَ السُّخْطَ وأحْسَنَ الرِّضى۔
How ugly is displeasure and how nice pleasure is!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Displeasure)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما أقْبَحَ السُّخْطَ وأحْسَنَ الرِّضى۔
This Hadith emphasizes the contrast between displeasure and pleasure. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (sukht) "سُّخْطَ" refers to displeasure, anger, or wrath. It signifies a state of being upset, frustrated, or resentful. On the other hand, the word (ridha) "رِّضى" means pleasure, contentment, or satisfaction. It represents a state of inner peace, tranquility, and acceptance.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the significance of avoiding displeasure and embracing pleasure. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of controlling one's anger and seeking contentment in various situations. For instance, in Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says,
Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the virtue of restraining anger and forgiving others, which leads to the pleasure of Allah. Similarly, in Surah Al-Fussilat (41:34), Allah states,
And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.
This verse encourages us to respond to negativity with kindness and goodness, thus transforming enmity into friendship. By doing so, we not only please Allah but also create harmony and peace within our relationships.
Imam Ali's statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their own behavior and attitudes. Displeasure, anger, and resentment can lead to destructive consequences, both in our personal lives and in society as a whole. It can strain relationships, create divisions, and hinder personal growth. Conversely, embracing pleasure, contentment, and forgiveness can bring about positive outcomes, such as improved relationships, inner peace, and spiritual growth.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. He understood the importance of controlling one's anger and seeking contentment in all aspects of life. His teachings and actions serve as a guiding light for Muslims, reminding us to prioritize inner peace and harmony.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the stark contrast between displeasure and pleasure. It reminds us of the importance of controlling our anger, seeking contentment, and embracing forgiveness. By doing so, we can cultivate a peaceful and harmonious society, pleasing Allah and benefiting ourselves and those around us. May Allah grant us the ability to control our anger and seek His pleasure in all that we do.
