لانَجاةَ لِمَنْ لاإيمانَ لَهُ۔
There is no salvation for one who has no faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Success, Prosperity And Salvation)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لانَجاةَ لِمَنْ لاإيمانَ لَهُ۔
This can be translated as,
There is no salvation for one who has no faith.
In this impactful saying , Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of faith in attaining salvation.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (la najata) "لانَجاةَ" refers to salvation or deliverance from harm or destruction. It implies being saved from the consequences of one's actions and attaining eternal bliss in the Hereafter. The word (liman) "لِمَنْ" means "for one who" or
to the one who.
(la) "لا" negates the existence of something, in this case, salvation. Finally, (la iman) "لاإيمانَ" signifies the absence of faith or belief.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of faith and belief in attaining salvation. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:257),
Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light.
This verse highlights that faith is a means of being guided towards the light of truth and being protected from the darkness of ignorance and disbelief.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah states,
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse emphasizes that faith alone is not sufficient for salvation; it must be accompanied by righteous actions and the promotion of truth and patience.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement aligns with these Quranic teachings. He emphasizes that without faith, there can be no salvation. Faith is the foundation upon which all righteous actions and deeds are built. It is through faith that one recognizes the truth, follows the path of righteousness, and seeks closeness to Allah.
The consequences of lacking faith are grave. Without faith, one is susceptible to being led astray by false ideologies, desires, and worldly temptations. Such a person may prioritize their own desires over the commandments of Allah, leading to a life of disobedience and spiritual emptiness. Ultimately, without faith, one is deprived of the guidance and mercy of Allah, which are essential for attaining salvation.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of nurturing and strengthening our faith. It is through faith that we find solace, purpose, and guidance in this worldly life. Faith enables us to navigate the challenges and trials of life with patience and trust in Allah's plan. It is through faith that we seek forgiveness for our sins, strive for self-improvement, and work towards attaining the ultimate salvation in the Hereafter.
As Muslims, we must strive to deepen our faith through seeking knowledge, performing righteous deeds, and constantly reflecting upon the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt. By doing so, we can ensure that our faith remains steadfast and that we are on the path of salvation.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to strengthen our faith and guide us towards salvation. May we always be among those who believe and strive to do righteous deeds. Ameen.
