— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to keep themselves in the company of a virtuous and pious brother, as it leads to safety and protection. The word (brother) "أخاَ" in this Hadith refers to a fellow Muslim who possesses the qualities of righteousness and piety. The word (virtuous) "التُّقى" refers to someone who is mindful of Allah's commands and avoids anything that displeases Him. The word (pious) "الدّينِ" refers to someone who is deeply committed to their faith and practices it sincerely.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with righteous individuals who can positively influence our lives. It encourages Muslims to seek companionship with those who are dedicated to following the teachings of Islam, as their company will bring about safety and protection from the temptations and pitfalls of the world.

The Quran supports this concept of seeking righteous companionship and the benefits it brings. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 18:28)

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.

This verse highlights the importance of surrounding oneself with individuals who are devoted to the remembrance of Allah and who strive to please Him. Being in the company of such individuals helps to strengthen one's faith and provides a sense of security and tranquility.

Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes seeking advice and guidance from knowledgeable individuals. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 16:43)

So ask the people of the message if you do not know.

This verse encourages Muslims to seek advice and guidance from those who possess knowledge and understanding of the religion. Seeking advice from a virtuous and pious brother allows one to benefit from their wisdom and experience, leading to personal growth and spiritual development.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds Muslims of the importance of choosing their companions wisely. The company we keep has a significant impact on our thoughts, actions, and overall character. Surrounding ourselves with virtuous individuals helps to reinforce our commitment to righteousness and piety. It creates an environment that fosters spiritual growth and protects us from the negative influences of society.

By seeking advice from a virtuous brother, we gain valuable insights and perspectives that can guide us in making informed decisions. This guidance can prevent us from falling into harmful situations and lead us towards success and prosperity. The advice of a righteous individual is rooted in the teachings of Islam and is based on the principles of justice, compassion, and wisdom.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively seek out companionship with individuals who possess virtuous qualities and to seek their guidance when needed. It encourages us to build strong bonds with those who will support us in our journey towards Allah's pleasure and help us navigate the challenges of life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with virtuous and pious individuals. It highlights the benefits of seeking companionship with those who are dedicated to practicing Islam and seeking guidance from them. By doing so, we can find safety, protection, and benefit from their wisdom and experience. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to choose righteous companions and seek their advice in our journey towards Him.
