مَنْ أصْلَحَ المَعادَ ظَفِرَ بِالسَّدادِ۔
One who improves his Hereafter attains success through the right [course].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Resurrection And The Hour)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أصْلَحَ المَعادَ ظَفِرَ بِالسَّدادِ۔
This can be translated as,
One who improves his Hereafter attains success through the right [course].
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (aslaha) "أصْلَحَ" in the Hadith refers to the act of improving or rectifying something. In the context of the Hereafter, it implies making efforts to enhance one's spiritual state, purify one's soul, and strive towards righteousness. This includes performing good deeds, avoiding sins, and seeking forgiveness for any wrongdoings. It is a continuous process of self-improvement and self-evaluation.
The term (al-ma'ad) "المَعادَ" refers to the Hereafter, the ultimate destination and eternal life after death. It encompasses the Day of Judgment, the accountability of our actions, and the rewards or punishments that await us based on our deeds in this worldly life. The Hereafter is a fundamental belief in Islam and serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for righteousness and seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the significance of improving our Hereafter, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3),
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse emphasizes the importance of faith, righteous actions, and mutual encouragement towards truth and patience. It highlights the need for continuous improvement in our spiritual journey.
Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world.
This verse reminds us to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our efforts towards attaining success in the Hereafter. It encourages us to utilize the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to secure our eternal abode.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their Hereafter and work towards its improvement. By focusing on our spiritual growth, performing good deeds, and seeking forgiveness for our shortcomings, we can attain success in the Hereafter. This success is not limited to the rewards and blessings promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but also encompasses the tranquility, contentment, and fulfillment that comes from leading a righteous life.
The consequences of neglecting the improvement of our Hereafter are evident in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:103-104), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the regret of those who neglected their Hereafter, saying,
Then, when the Horn is blown, there will be no relationships between them that Day, nor will they ask about one another. And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful.
This verse serves as a warning against neglecting the Hereafter and emphasizes the importance of striving for success in the eternal life.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that improving our Hereafter is a lifelong journey that requires constant effort, self-reflection, and adherence to the teachings of Islam. By prioritizing our spiritual growth and striving towards righteousness, we can attain success in the Hereafter, which encompasses both the rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the inner peace that comes from leading a virtuous life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to improve our Hereafter and attain success through the right path.
