(Ghurar al-Hikam: Contentment And The Contented)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إنَّ فِي القُنُوعِ لَغَناءٌ۔
This can be translated as,
Verily in contentment there is prosperity.
In this profound statement, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance and benefits of contentment in one's life.
The word (qunoo) "قُنُوع" refers to contentment or satisfaction with what one possesses. It is the state of being pleased and grateful for what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us, without longing for excessive material possessions or worldly desires. It is the opposite of greed and covetousness.
To understand the significance of contentment, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:152),
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
This verse emphasizes the importance of gratitude and remembrance of Allah, which are closely related to contentment. When we are content with what we have, we are more likely to be grateful to Allah and acknowledge His blessings upon us.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the connection between contentment and patience. When we are content with our circumstances, we are more likely to be patient and trust in Allah's plan for us. This patience strengthens our resolve and allows us to face challenges with a positive mindset.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that in contentment, there is prosperity. This prosperity is not limited to material wealth, but encompasses spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being. When we are content, we are free from the constant pursuit of worldly desires, which can lead to stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction. Contentment brings inner peace and tranquility, allowing us to focus on our spiritual growth and the pursuit of higher virtues.
Contentment also protects us from the negative consequences of greed and envy. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:23),
That is because they followed what angered Allah and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds.
When we are not content and constantly desire more, we may engage in actions that displease Allah and harm others. Contentment helps us appreciate the blessings we have been given and use them in a manner that pleases Allah.
Moreover, contentment fosters a sense of gratitude and humility. It reminds us that everything we have is a gift from Allah, and we should be grateful for His blessings. In Surah An-Nahl (16:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
When we are content, we recognize the countless blessings bestowed upon us and express gratitude to Allah for His infinite mercy.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the profound lesson that contentment leads to prosperity. By being content with what we have, we attain spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being. Contentment protects us from the negative consequences of greed and envy, fosters gratitude and humility, and allows us to focus on our spiritual growth. Let us strive to cultivate contentment in our lives and experience the true prosperity it brings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be content and bless us with His eternal mercy.
