(Ghurar al-Hikam: Calmness and Solemnity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he expresses his preference for the dignity and honor that comes with old age over the vitality and energy of youth. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this statement and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (waqar) "وَقارُ" in the Hadith refers to the solemnity, dignity, and respect that is associated with old age. It signifies the wisdom, experience, and maturity that comes with the passage of time. On the other hand, the word (nadarah) "نَضارَةِ" refers to the freshness, vigor, and vitality of youth.

The preference expressed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) for the solemnity of old age is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the value and importance of wisdom, knowledge, and experience throughout the Quran. In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah says, (Quran 31:12)

And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], 'Be grateful to Allah.' And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.

This verse highlights the significance of wisdom and gratitude, which are qualities often associated with old age. The wisdom gained through years of experience enables individuals to make better decisions and navigate through the challenges of life. It is this wisdom that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) cherishes and considers more beloved than the vigor of youth.

Furthermore, the Quran also emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah says, (Quran 47:19)

So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place.

This verse highlights the significance of knowledge and understanding. The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong journey, and it is through this journey that one attains wisdom and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, recognizes the value of old age and the wisdom it brings.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) preference for the solemnity of old age over the vigor of youth is not to undermine the vitality and energy of youth. Rather, it is a reminder to Muslims that while youth is a time of strength and vigor, it is also a time to seek knowledge, develop wisdom, and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.

The consequences of valuing the solemnity of old age are manifold. It encourages Muslims to respect and honor the elderly, recognizing their wisdom and experience. It also motivates the younger generation to seek knowledge and wisdom, understanding that these qualities are not limited to a specific age group.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge, developing wisdom, and valuing the experiences that come with age. It is a call to embrace the journey of life, recognizing that each stage has its own unique blessings and opportunities for growth.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to appreciate the value of old age and the vitality of youth. May He bless us with knowledge, understanding, and the ability to navigate through the stages of life with grace and wisdom. Ameen.
