اَلعُزْلَةُ أفْضَلُ شِيَمِ الأكْياسِ۔
Seclusion is the best trait of the sagacious.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Seclusion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Seclusion is the best trait of the sagacious.
This Hadith emphasizes the virtue and excellence of solitude, seclusion, or isolation for those who possess wisdom and insight.
The word (uzlah) "عُزْلَةُ" refers to seclusion or isolation, while (afdal) "أفْضَلُ" means the best or the most superior. The term (shiyam) "شِيَمِ" refers to a trait or characteristic, and (al-akyaas) "الأكْياسِ" refers to the sagacious or wise individuals.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-An'am, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 21:7)
And We sent not before you, [O Muhammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message if you do not know
This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge from those who have been granted divine revelation.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. He was the gate to the city of knowledge, and his seclusion played a significant role in his acquisition of divine wisdom. By isolating himself from worldly distractions, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was able to focus solely on his spiritual growth and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran also emphasizes the importance of solitude and reflection. In Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], (Quran 3:190-191)
Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire".
These verses highlight the importance of contemplating the signs of Allah's creation and remembering Him in various states. Seclusion provides the ideal environment for deep reflection, introspection, and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It allows individuals to detach themselves from worldly distractions and focus on their spiritual journey.
When one engages in seclusion, they are able to detach themselves from the noise and chaos of the world. This detachment enables them to gain clarity, develop a deeper understanding of themselves, and strengthen their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Seclusion allows individuals to introspect, reflect on their actions, seek forgiveness, and strive for self-improvement.
Furthermore, seclusion provides an opportunity for individuals to study and contemplate the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). It allows them to delve into the depths of knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the divine message. By isolating themselves, individuals can immerse themselves in the study of Islamic sciences, jurisprudence, and spirituality.
The consequences of practicing seclusion are profound. It leads to spiritual growth, increased mindfulness, and a stronger connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It allows individuals to develop a sense of tranquility, inner peace, and contentment. Seclusion also helps individuals overcome worldly temptations, distractions, and negative influences.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the virtue and excellence of seclusion for those who possess wisdom and insight. By isolating oneself from worldly distractions, individuals can focus on their spiritual growth, deepen their understanding of the divine message, and strengthen their connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Seclusion provides a conducive environment for reflection, introspection, and self-improvement. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and insight to practice seclusion and benefit from its virtues.
