(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Etiquette is a reflection of the intellect.

This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of good manners and behavior as a manifestation of one's inner intellect and understanding.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word "adab" refers to etiquette or good manners. It encompasses a wide range of behaviors and actions that reflect respect, courtesy, and consideration towards others. It includes aspects such as politeness, humility, kindness, and honesty. The word "sura" means form or image, indicating that one's manners and behavior are a visible representation of their inner intellect and understanding.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good character and manners. In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah says, (68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the exemplary character of the Prophet Muhammad (), who serves as the ultimate role model for Muslims.

Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that good manners are not only a reflection of one's intellect but also a means of attaining success in this life and the hereafter. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (49:13)

Indeed, Allah loves those who act with excellence.

This verse reminds us that displaying good manners is a way to earn the love and pleasure of Allah.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to realize that our manners and behavior are not separate from our intellect and understanding. Rather, they are intertwined and interconnected. A person with true intelligence and wisdom will naturally exhibit good manners and treat others with respect and kindness.

When we embody good manners, we create a positive impact on those around us. Our words and actions have the power to influence and inspire others. By treating others with kindness and respect, we foster a harmonious and compassionate society. Conversely, neglecting good manners can lead to discord, animosity, and a breakdown of relationships.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we can see that etiquette is not merely a superficial display of politeness. It goes beyond simple gestures and encompasses the way we interact with others in all aspects of life. It includes how we speak, listen, and respond to others, how we handle conflicts, and how we fulfill our responsibilities.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the profound connection between etiquette and intellect. He exemplified this in his own life, treating friend and foe alike with respect and dignity. His teachings and actions serve as a timeless reminder for Muslims to prioritize good manners as an integral part of their character.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that etiquette is not a superficial aspect of our behavior but a reflection of our inner intellect and understanding. It reminds us to prioritize good manners in our interactions with others, as they have the power to shape our relationships and contribute to a harmonious society. May Allah guide us to embody the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt and grant us the wisdom to cultivate excellent manners in our lives.
