When you make your speech good, then make your action good also so that you can bring together excellent speech with virtuous benevolence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of aligning our words with our actions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us that if we speak in a good and virtuous manner, we should also ensure that our actions reflect the same goodness and virtue. By doing so, we can bring together the benefits of eloquent speech with the merits of righteous conduct.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and concepts it presents. The word (qawl) "قَوْلَ" refers to speech or words, while (amal) "عَمَلَ" refers to action or deed. The term (ahsanta) "أحْسَنْتَ" means to make something good or excellent. The word (maziyyah) "مَزِيَّةِ" denotes the advantage or benefit, and (fadilah) "فَضيلَةِ" refers to virtue or excellence. Lastly, (al-ihsan) "الإحْسانِ" signifies benevolence or goodness.
To understand the significance of aligning our words with our actions, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3):
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights the importance of not only believing but also acting righteously and advising others towards truth and patience. It emphasizes the need for our actions to complement our beliefs and words.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of speaking and treating others with kindness, respect, and dignity. It reminds us that our words should reflect our belief in the principles of justice and equality.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that our words hold weight and influence, and they should be backed by actions that align with the values we espouse. For example, if we speak about the importance of honesty, we should ensure that our actions reflect honesty in our dealings with others. If we advocate for kindness and compassion, we should demonstrate these qualities in our interactions with those around us.
By aligning our words with our actions, we not only uphold the integrity of our character but also inspire and motivate others to follow suit. Our words become more impactful when they are supported by our actions, as people are more likely to be influenced by what they see us doing rather than just what they hear us saying.
Conversely, if we speak eloquently but our actions contradict our words, we risk losing credibility and trust. People may become skeptical of our intentions and question the authenticity of our beliefs. Therefore, it is essential to strive for consistency between our words and actions, as this consistency strengthens our character and fosters trust and respect among others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of aligning our words with our actions. It urges us to strive for excellence in both our speech and conduct, so that we can bring together the benefits of eloquent speech with the merits of virtuous benevolence. By doing so, we not only uphold the integrity of our character but also inspire and motivate others to follow the path of righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to align our words and actions, and may He bless us with sincerity and righteousness in all aspects of our lives.
