اَلمَكانَةُ مِنَ المُلُوكِ مِفْتاحُ المِحْنَةِ، وبَذْرُ الفِتْنَةِ۔
Holding a post with kings is a key of tribulation and the seed of affliction.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Kings And Rulers)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Holding a post with kings is a key of tribulation and the seed of affliction.
Let us delve into the meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (makana) "مَكَانَةُ" in the Hadith refers to a position or post of authority. It signifies a high-ranking position that one may hold in the worldly realm, particularly in the presence of kings or rulers. This position comes with power, influence, and access to resources. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that such a position can be a (miftah) "مِفْتَاحُ" - a key that unlocks tribulations and trials. It can also be the (bathr) "بَذْرُ" - the seed that sows the seeds of affliction and turmoil.
To understand the wisdom behind this statement, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Mulk (67:2),
He who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.
This verse highlights that life itself is a test, and the positions of authority and power can be particularly challenging tests for individuals.
Moreover, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse emphasizes that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. Holding a position with kings or rulers can intensify these tests, as it exposes individuals to the complexities and temptations of the world.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the potential pitfalls of such positions. When one holds a post with kings, they may be tempted to compromise their principles, engage in unethical practices, or abandon their duty towards justice and fairness. The allure of power and the desire for personal gain can cloud one's judgment and lead them astray from the path of righteousness.
We find an example in the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) in the Quran. Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was given a position of authority by the king of Egypt. However, when the king's wife attempted to seduce him, Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) remained steadfast in his faith and integrity. He chose to endure imprisonment rather than succumb to the temptations of power and privilege. This story serves as a reminder that positions of authority can be a test of one's character and faith.
Furthermore, holding a post with kings can also lead to conflicts and divisions within the Muslim community. The pursuit of power and influence can create rivalries and discord among individuals who seek to gain favor with rulers. This is evident in the history of Islam, where power struggles and political divisions emerged due to the desire for positions of authority.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the potential dangers and challenges that come with holding positions of authority. He advises us to be cautious and mindful of the tests and tribulations that may arise in such circumstances. It is essential for individuals in positions of power to remain steadfast in their faith, uphold justice, and prioritize the well-being of the community over personal gain.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims about the potential pitfalls and challenges that come with holding positions of authority. It highlights the importance of maintaining integrity, upholding justice, and remaining steadfast in faith, even in the face of temptation and adversity. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to navigate the trials and tribulations of this world, and may He guide us to the path of righteousness.
