— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Turning Backward)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مِنْ عَلاماتِ الإدْبارِ سُوءُ الظَّنِّ بالنَّصيحِ۔

This can be translated as,

From the signs of turning backward is thinking ill of the one who gives you good advice.

Let us delve into the important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (idbar) "إدْبارِ" refers to turning backward or regressing. (su') "سُوءُ" means evil or bad, and (thann) "الظَّنِّ" refers to thinking or assuming. Lastly, (nasih) "النَّصيحِ" means good advice or counsel.

To further comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.

This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from negative assumptions. It warns against jumping to conclusions without evidence, as it can lead to sin and harm.

Additionally, in Surah An-Nur (24:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,

Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, 'This is an obvious falsehood'?

This verse highlights the significance of thinking well of fellow believers and not hastily assuming the worst about them. It encourages Muslims to have a positive mindset and give others the benefit of the doubt.

Now, let us reflect on the exegesis of the Hadith itself. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and deep understanding of Islam, teaches us that one of the signs of regressing or turning backward is having a negative perception of those who offer us sincere advice. This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to be cautious of their thoughts and assumptions about others, especially when they are trying to guide us on the right path.

When someone offers us good advice, it is essential to appreciate their intention and consider the wisdom behind their words. We should not let our egos or preconceived notions cloud our judgment. Instead, we should reflect upon the advice, evaluate its merits, and act accordingly. By doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also strengthen our relationships with others and foster a harmonious community.

Conversely, if we develop a habit of thinking ill of those who offer us sincere advice, we risk isolating ourselves from valuable guidance and wisdom. This negative mindset can hinder our personal growth and prevent us from making positive changes in our lives. Moreover, it can damage relationships and create a culture of mistrust and animosity within the Muslim community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their thoughts and assumptions about those who offer them good advice. By following the teachings of the Quran and the wisdom of Imam Ali, we can cultivate a positive mindset, appreciate the sincerity of others, and strive for personal and communal growth. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to always think well of others and grant us the wisdom to benefit from the advice of those around us.
