Jealousy gives rise to depression.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Jealousy)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-Hasadu yunshi al-kamad." Translated into English, it means,

Jealousy gives rise to depression.

Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement and explore its implications in the light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. "Al-Hasadu" refers to jealousy, which is a negative emotion arising from a desire to possess what others have, whether it be material possessions, talents, or blessings. "Yunshi" means to give rise to or cause, and "al-kamad" refers to depression, a state of deep sadness and hopelessness.

The Quran provides us with guidance on the detrimental effects of jealousy and its consequences. In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the destructive nature of jealousy, stating, (Quran 20:131)

And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.

This verse highlights the importance of contentment and gratitude for what Allah has bestowed upon us. Jealousy stems from a lack of appreciation for our own blessings and a failure to recognize that Allah's provision is abundant and tailored to each individual's needs.

Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement rather than harboring jealousy towards others. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 57:21)

So that Allah may distinguish the wicked from the good and place the wicked some of them upon others and heap them all together and put them into Hell. It is those who are the losers.

This verse reminds us that Allah is the ultimate judge, and it is not our place to envy or resent others. Instead, we should focus on our own actions and strive to improve ourselves in the sight of Allah. Jealousy only leads to a negative mindset and hinders our personal growth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the detrimental effects of jealousy on one's mental well-being. Jealousy can consume a person, leading to feelings of inadequacy, bitterness, and despair. It robs individuals of their peace of mind and prevents them from experiencing true happiness and contentment.

Moreover, jealousy can have far-reaching consequences in both personal and societal contexts. It can breed animosity and resentment among individuals, leading to strained relationships and even conflicts. This is why Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against the destructive nature of jealousy, as it not only affects the individual but also has the potential to disrupt the harmony of communities and societies.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating gratitude, contentment, and self-improvement. Instead of being consumed by jealousy, we should focus on our own blessings and strive to make the most of them. By doing so, we can attain inner peace and contribute positively to our communities.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder of the detrimental effects of jealousy on our mental well-being. It urges us to reflect on our own blessings, avoid comparing ourselves to others, and strive for self-improvement. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the destructive nature of jealousy and grant us contentment and tranquility in our hearts.
