(Ghurar al-Hikam: Honour And The Honourable)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The ladder of honor is humility and generosity.

This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the importance of two virtues: humility and generosity. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us examine the word "humility" or "tawadu" in Arabic. Tawadu refers to the act of lowering oneself, both in terms of physical posture and in character. It is the opposite of arrogance and pride. The Quran emphasizes the virtue of humility in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse teaches us that true nobility lies in righteousness, not in worldly status or wealth. It is through humility that we can attain this righteousness and earn the honor bestowed by Allah.

Furthermore, the Quran also highlights the importance of humility in our interactions with others. In Surah Al-Furqan (25:63), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the servants of the Most Merciful, saying,

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse teaches us that humility enables us to navigate through life with grace and patience, even in the face of adversity. It is through humility that we can maintain peace and harmony in our relationships.

The second virtue mentioned in the Hadith is "generosity" or "sakhā". Generosity is the act of giving freely, without expecting anything in return. It encompasses both material and non-material forms of giving. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of generosity and its rewards. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse illustrates the immense blessings and rewards that come with acts of generosity. By giving to others, we not only benefit them but also increase our own blessings and honor in the sight of Allah.

Moreover, the Quran also encourages us to be generous in our dealings with others. In Surah Al-Isra (17:32), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,

And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. And when you testify, be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative. And the covenant of Allah fulfill. This has He instructed you that you may remember.

This verse teaches us to be fair and just in our financial transactions and to fulfill our obligations towards others, especially those who are vulnerable. By being generous, we uphold the principles of justice and compassion, which are integral to our faith.

In light of the above Quranic verses, we can understand the profound wisdom behind the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Humility and generosity are not only virtuous qualities in themselves, but they also serve as the means to attain honor and elevate our status in the sight of Allah. When we humble ourselves before Allah and others, we recognize our own limitations and acknowledge the greatness of the Creator. This humility enables us to seek knowledge, learn from others, and grow spiritually. Similarly, when we are generous, we emulate the attributes of Allah, the Most Generous, and fulfill our duty towards our fellow human beings. Through acts of kindness and charity, we uplift those in need and contribute to the betterment of society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to cultivate the virtues of humility and generosity. By embodying these qualities, we not only attain honor and blessings in this world but also pave the way for eternal success in the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice humility and generosity in our lives and may He elevate our ranks through these noble virtues.
