أهْلُ القُرْآنِ أهْلُ اللّهِ وخاصَّتُهُ۔
The people of the Qur’an are the people of Allah and His special servants.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Qur’an)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The people of the Qur’an are the people of Allah and His special servants.
This wise utterance emphasizes the elevated status and honor bestowed upon those who dedicate themselves to the study, recitation, and implementation of the Qur’an. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
First, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. "Ahlu al-Qur'an" refers to the people of the Qur’an, those who have devoted themselves to the study and understanding of Allah's divine revelation. They are the ones who have made the Qur’an an integral part of their lives, seeking guidance and enlightenment from its verses. "Ahlu Allah" signifies that these individuals are the people of Allah, chosen by Him for their deep connection with His words. Lastly, "khassatuhu" denotes their special status and distinction in the eyes of Allah.
The Quran itself emphasizes the importance and virtue of the people of the Qur’an. In Surah Al-Imran (3:113), Allah says,
They are not all the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer].
This verse highlights the distinction of those who recite and ponder over the verses of Allah, acknowledging their elevated position among the people.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan (25:30), Allah says,
And the Messenger has said, 'O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing] abandoned.'
This verse serves as a reminder that the true people of the Qur’an are those who hold it dear to their hearts, constantly seeking guidance from its teachings. They are the ones who strive to implement its principles in their daily lives, rather than neglecting or abandoning it.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) sheds light on the immense rewards and blessings that await those who dedicate themselves to the Qur’an. By becoming the people of the Qur’an, individuals establish a deep connection with Allah, as they immerse themselves in His divine words. This connection leads to a heightened sense of spirituality, increased knowledge, and a greater understanding of their purpose in life.
The people of the Qur’an are not only blessed with spiritual enlightenment, but they also become the recipients of Allah's special care and protection. Their commitment to the Qur’an serves as a shield against evil and a means of attaining closeness to Allah. As they strive to live their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Qur’an, they become the embodiment of righteousness and piety.
Moreover, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a motivation for all Muslims to engage with the Qur’an on a deeper level. It encourages us to not only recite the Qur’an, but to also reflect upon its verses, seek knowledge, and implement its teachings in our daily lives. By doing so, we can aspire to become among the people of Allah, earning His pleasure and attaining a special status in His sight.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance and honor bestowed upon the people of the Qur’an. It serves as a reminder for all Muslims to deepen their connection with the Qur’an, seeking guidance, knowledge, and spiritual enlightenment. By becoming the people of the Qur’an, we can strive to attain the special status and blessings promised by Allah. May Allah grant us the ability to become true people of the Qur’an and may He bless us with His guidance and mercy.
