Hadith #7468

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The adornments of a man are his knowledge and his forbearance.

Firstly, let us examine the word "muzayyin" which means "adornments" or "beautification." It signifies the qualities or attributes that enhance a person's character and elevate their status. The Quran emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

Forbearance, represented by the word "hilm," refers to patience, self-restraint, and the ability to control one's emotions in challenging situations. It is a quality that enables individuals to respond to adversity with calmness and wisdom. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of forbearance. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And those who are patient, seeking the countenance of their Lord.

This verse highlights that patience is a virtue that leads to the pleasure of Allah. Additionally, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:37), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Indeed, Allah loves those who are patient.

This verse emphasizes that forbearance is beloved to Allah and is a characteristic of the righteous.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith, emphasizes the significance of knowledge and forbearance as essential qualities for a person's adornment.
