بِالعَقْلِ تُنالُ الخَيْراتُ۔
Through the intellect, [acts of goodness and] virtues are attained.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالعَقْلِ تُنالُ الخَيْراتُ۔" This can be translated as,
Through the intellect, [acts of goodness and] virtues are attained.
In this thought-provoking Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of utilizing one's intellect in order to attain goodness and virtues in life.
Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (intellect) "عَقْلِ" refers to the faculty of reasoning, understanding, and discernment that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon human beings. It is through this intellectual capacity that we are able to comprehend and make sense of the world around us. The word (attained) "تُنالُ" signifies the act of acquiring or achieving something. And finally, (goodness and virtues) "الخَيْراتُ" encompasses all acts of righteousness, piety, and moral excellence.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of intellect and reasoning in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 269, Allah says,
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great good.
This verse highlights the divine gift of wisdom and intellect, which leads to great goodness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 43, Allah states,
And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.
This verse emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding, which can only be attained through the proper use of intellect. It is through knowledge and understanding that one is able to discern between good and evil, and make choices that lead to righteousness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the use of their intellect in all aspects of life. By utilizing our God-given intellect, we are able to make informed decisions, distinguish between right and wrong, and choose actions that lead to goodness and virtue.
For example, when faced with a moral dilemma, a person with a sound intellect will carefully analyze the situation, consider the consequences of their actions, and choose the path that aligns with Islamic principles and values. They will seek knowledge and understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in order to make informed choices.
The consequences of neglecting the intellect can be detrimental. Without the proper use of intellect, individuals may fall into ignorance, superstition, and misguided beliefs. They may be easily swayed by false ideologies and become susceptible to manipulation. This can lead to actions that are contrary to the teachings of Islam and result in negative consequences for both individuals and society as a whole.
On the other hand, when Muslims prioritize the use of their intellect, they are able to contribute positively to society. They become agents of change, advocating for justice, equality, and compassion. They make decisions that are rooted in wisdom and understanding, leading to personal growth and the betterment of their communities.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of utilizing our intellect to attain goodness and virtues. By seeking knowledge, understanding, and making informed choices, Muslims can lead a life that is aligned with the teachings of Islam. It is through the proper use of our intellect that we can contribute positively to society and strive for personal growth and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to utilize our intellect in the best possible way.
