رُبَّ مَوْهِبَة خَيْرٌ مِنْهَا الفَجيعَةُ۔
any a grant is such that misfortune is better than it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Grant)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
رُبَّ مَوْهِبَة خَيْرٌ مِنْهَا الفَجيعَةُ۔
This Hadith can be translated into English as:
Any a grant is such that misfortune is better than it.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (mawhiba) "مَوْهِبَة" in the Hadith refers to a gift, favor, or blessing bestowed upon someone. It signifies an act of generosity or kindness from one person to another. On the other hand, the word (al-faji'ah) "الفَجيعَةُ" means misfortune, calamity, or hardship. It represents a difficult or distressing situation that one may encounter.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 216:
But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.
This verse reminds us that sometimes what we perceive as misfortune or hardship may, in fact, be a blessing in disguise. Our limited knowledge and understanding may lead us to dislike or resent certain situations, but Allah's wisdom surpasses our comprehension. He knows what is truly beneficial for us, even if it may not align with our immediate desires or preferences.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan, verse 7, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
They fulfill their vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.
This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling our promises and obligations, even in the face of adversity. It teaches us that enduring hardships and remaining steadfast in our faith can lead to great rewards in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the idea that sometimes the difficulties we encounter can serve as a means of purification and growth. They can be a test of our patience, resilience, and trust in Allah's plan. Just as a gift may bring joy and happiness, misfortune can also lead to spiritual growth and a deeper connection with our Creator.
For example, imagine a person who is granted wealth and material possessions without any hardships or challenges. They may become arrogant, self-centered, and detached from the struggles of others. On the other hand, someone who faces misfortune, such as financial difficulties or loss, may develop empathy, humility, and a greater appreciation for the blessings they do have.
In another scenario, consider a person who is granted power and authority without any obstacles or opposition. They may abuse their position, oppress others, and neglect their responsibilities. However, someone who faces adversity and opposition in their pursuit of justice and truth may become a beacon of righteousness, inspiring others and leaving a lasting impact.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) amazing Hadith reminds us to reflect on the deeper meaning behind the challenges and blessings we encounter in life. It encourages us to trust in Allah's wisdom and to embrace both the joys and hardships with gratitude and patience. By doing so, we can strive towards personal growth, spiritual development, and ultimately, attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize the blessings within misfortune and the strength to endure hardships with patience and gratitude. May He guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
