Sit in the company of scholars and you will increase your knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Scholar)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Sit in the company of scholars and you will increase your knowledge.
This wise utterance emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and the role of scholars in our lives. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (Jalis) "جالِسِ" in Arabic means to sit or be in the company of someone. It implies a close and intimate association with individuals who possess knowledge and wisdom. The word (Ulama) "عُلَمَاءَ" refers to scholars or those who have acquired deep knowledge and understanding in various fields, particularly religious knowledge. The word (Tazdad) "تَزْدَدْ" means to increase or grow.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and the value of scholars. In Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9, Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes that knowledge elevates individuals and sets them apart from the ignorant.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila, verse 11, Allah says,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse indicates that knowledge is a means of spiritual elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It emphasizes that those who possess knowledge will be granted a higher status in this world and the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement encourages Muslims to actively seek the company of scholars. By doing so, they can benefit from their knowledge, wisdom, and experience. Sitting with scholars allows individuals to engage in discussions, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of various subjects, including religious matters.
When we sit in the company of scholars, we are exposed to different perspectives, interpretations, and insights. This exposure broadens our horizons and enables us to develop a more comprehensive understanding of Islam. It helps us to navigate the complexities of life and make informed decisions based on sound knowledge.
Moreover, sitting with scholars fosters an environment of intellectual growth and spiritual development. It motivates individuals to engage in critical thinking, reflection, and self-improvement. By observing the behavior and character of scholars, we can learn valuable lessons in humility, patience, and righteousness.
The consequences of sitting in the company of scholars are manifold. Firstly, it leads to the acquisition of knowledge. As we engage in discussions and seek guidance from scholars, our understanding of various subjects, including religious teachings, deepens. This knowledge equips us with the tools to navigate the challenges of life and make informed decisions.
Secondly, sitting with scholars cultivates a sense of humility and respect. When we recognize the vastness of knowledge possessed by scholars, we realize our own limitations and become more humble in our approach to seeking knowledge. This humility opens the doors of learning and allows us to benefit from the wisdom of others.
Thirdly, sitting with scholars strengthens our faith and enhances our spiritual growth. Scholars possess a deep understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Their guidance helps us to develop a stronger connection with Allah and navigate the spiritual journey with clarity and conviction.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of sitting in the company of scholars to increase our knowledge. By seeking the company of knowledgeable individuals, we can benefit from their wisdom, guidance, and experience. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the value of knowledge and the role of scholars in our lives. As Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to actively seek knowledge and engage in the pursuit of wisdom by sitting with scholars. May Allah grant us the opportunity to benefit from the company of scholars and increase our knowledge for the betterment of ourselves and our communities.
