Hadith #9697

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

لامُرُوَّةَ كَالتَّنزُُّهُ عَنِ المَ آثِمِ۔

which translates to

There is no magnanimity like remaining free from sins.

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance and virtue of abstaining from sinful actions.

Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (lamurwah) "لامُرُوَّةَ" refers to magnanimity or nobility. To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13):

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true nobility lies in righteousness and piety. It is not based on wealth, lineage, or worldly status. The one who refrains from sins and strives to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is considered the most noble in the sight of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.

This verse highlights the contrast between those who seek worldly power and those who strive for righteousness. The true magnanimity lies in seeking the rewards of the Hereafter and avoiding corruption and sin in this world.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being over worldly desires. It encourages us to strive for righteousness and to distance ourselves from sinful actions. By doing so, we attain true magnanimity and honor in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
