(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One whose character is bad, his sustenance is restricted.

This Hadith highlights the correlation between a person's moral conduct and their provision from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It emphasizes that a person's behavior and manners have a direct impact on their livelihood.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (khulquhu) "خُلْقُهُ" refers to one's character or moral disposition. It encompasses a person's behavior, manners, and ethics. It reflects the way they interact with others and the values they uphold. The word (daqa) "ضاقَ" means to become narrow or restricted, while (rizquhu) "رِزْقُهُ" refers to sustenance or provision.

To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good character and its impact on our lives. In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah says, (Quran 31:18)

And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

This verse reminds us to avoid arrogance and pride, as it can lead to a negative character. When we treat others with contempt and walk arrogantly on this earth, we distance ourselves from the mercy and blessings of Allah. Our sustenance may become restricted as a consequence of our bad character, as mentioned in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 16:128)

Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.

This verse highlights the importance of fearing Allah and performing righteous deeds. When we strive to improve our character and engage in acts of kindness, Allah's blessings and provisions are bestowed upon us.

The consequences of having a bad character are not limited to restricted sustenance alone. A person with a negative disposition may face difficulties in their relationships, experience a lack of contentment, and struggle to find peace within themselves. On the other hand, a person with good character attracts the love and respect of others, enjoys harmonious relationships, and finds tranquility in their heart.

It is important to note that the Hadith does not imply that every difficulty a person faces in life is solely due to their character. Trials and tribulations are a part of the divine plan, and they serve as tests and opportunities for growth. However, the Hadith highlights the correlation between character and sustenance, reminding us of the importance of continuously striving to improve ourselves.

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense value of cultivating good character. It serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences, not only in the Hereafter but also in this worldly life. As Muslims, we should strive to embody the noble qualities exemplified by our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt, particularly Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his unparalleled knowledge and impeccable character.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that our character has a direct impact on our sustenance. By embodying good moral conduct, we not only attract the blessings and provisions of Allah but also experience a sense of fulfillment and contentment in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to improve our character and seek His pleasure in all that we do.
