In every blessing there is a reward.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

في كُلِّ نِعْمَة أجْرٌ۔

which translates to

In every blessing there is a reward.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance and value of the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words used. The word (ni'mah) "نِعْمَة" refers to blessings, favors, or bounties. It encompasses all the blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation, whether they are material or spiritual in nature. These blessings can include good health, wealth, knowledge, guidance, and countless other forms of goodness.

The word (ajr) "أجْرٌ" means reward or recompense. It signifies the positive consequences and benefits that accompany the recognition and appreciation of the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a reminder that every blessing we receive is an opportunity for us to express gratitude, seek closeness to Allah, and earn rewards in this life and the hereafter.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message conveyed in this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of gratitude and acknowledges that expressing gratitude for the blessings we receive leads to an increase in those blessings. When we recognize and appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us, we open ourselves up to receiving even more from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Our gratitude becomes a means of attracting further blessings and rewards.

Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah An-Nahl (16:18), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

This verse reminds us that the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) are countless and immeasurable. It is impossible for us to fully comprehend or enumerate the blessings we have been granted. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to constantly reflect upon and appreciate these blessings, recognizing that each one carries with it the potential for reward and benefit.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be grateful for the blessings in their lives and to never take them for granted. It encourages us to reflect upon the numerous blessings we have been bestowed with, both big and small, and to recognize the rewards that lie within them.

When we acknowledge and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives, we cultivate a positive mindset and a deeper connection with our Creator. This gratitude becomes a means of spiritual growth and a source of contentment and happiness. Moreover, it motivates us to utilize these blessings in ways that please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), such as using our wealth to help those in need, using our knowledge to educate others, or using our health to serve the community.

Conversely, neglecting or being ungrateful for the blessings we have been given can lead to their depreciation or loss. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in the Quran that ingratitude can result in the withdrawal of His blessings and even His punishment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that every blessing we receive carries with it the potential for reward and benefit. It urges us to express gratitude for these blessings and to utilize them in ways that please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we not only increase our own happiness and contentment but also strengthen our relationship with our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize and appreciate His blessings and to be grateful for them.
