اَلْكِذْبُ يُرْدِيكَ وإنْ أمِنْتَهُ۔
Lying destroys you even if you are [apparently made] safe by it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lying)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الكذب يرديك وإن أمنته
which translates to
Lying destroys you even if you are [apparently made] safe by it.
This wise utterance highlights the detrimental consequences of lying, regardless of any temporary benefits it may seem to provide.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the Quranic teachings that emphasize the importance of truthfulness and the consequences of falsehood.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of truthfulness in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 9:119)
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true
This verse encourages Muslims to align themselves with the truthful and to distance themselves from falsehood.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah warns against the consequences of lying, stating, (Quran 2:42)
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it]
This verse highlights the importance of upholding the truth and not distorting it or concealing it, even when it may be inconvenient or uncomfortable.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) complements these Quranic teachings by emphasizing the destructive nature of lying. It serves as a reminder to Muslims that even if lying may seem to provide temporary safety or benefit, it ultimately leads to ruin and destruction.
Lying not only erodes one's integrity and credibility but also damages relationships and trust. When a person lies, they betray the trust of others, causing harm and discord. Moreover, lying can lead to a vicious cycle of deceit, where one lie necessitates another, creating a web of falsehood that becomes increasingly difficult to untangle.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful Hadith serves as a motivation for Muslims to uphold the truth in all aspects of their lives. It encourages individuals to prioritize honesty and integrity, even in situations where lying may seem tempting or convenient.
By adhering to the principles of truthfulness, Muslims can foster trust, build strong relationships, and contribute to a just and harmonious society. The consequences of truthfulness are far-reaching, impacting not only individuals but also communities and nations.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the destructive nature of lying. It urges Muslims to prioritize truthfulness and integrity in all aspects of their lives, knowing that even if lying may provide temporary safety or benefit, it ultimately leads to ruin and destruction. By upholding the truth, Muslims can contribute to a just and harmonious society, fostering trust and building strong relationships. May Allah guide us all to the path of truthfulness and protect us from the pitfalls of falsehood.
