مَنْ عَمِلَ بِالحَقِّ رَبِحَ۔
One who acts upon the truth, profits.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ عَمِلَ بِالحَقِّ رَبِحَ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
One who acts upon the truth, profits.
Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (haqq) "حَقِّ" in this Hadith refers to the truth, righteousness, and justice. It encompasses all that is in accordance with the divine will and the teachings of Islam. Acting upon the truth means adhering to the principles and values prescribed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the Quran and demonstrated by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of acting upon the truth in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah says,
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights that true success lies in believing in the truth, performing righteous deeds, and encouraging others towards the path of truth and patience.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah states,
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.
This verse highlights that righteousness is not limited to mere rituals or outward displays, but it encompasses sincere belief, good deeds, and fulfilling one's responsibilities towards others.
When we act upon the truth, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to the betterment of society. Our actions become a means of spreading goodness, justice, and compassion. For example, when we speak the truth, we establish trust and integrity in our relationships. When we stand up against injustice, we contribute to the establishment of a just society. When we help those in need, we alleviate their suffering and bring about positive change.
Conversely, neglecting the truth and acting upon falsehood leads to negative consequences. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in the Quran, (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:42)
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
This verse highlights the importance of upholding the truth and not distorting it or hiding it for personal gain or to deceive others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the profound significance of acting upon the truth. By adhering to the principles of Islam and embodying righteousness in our actions, we not only attain personal benefit but also contribute to the betterment of society. Let us strive to be people of truth, upholding justice, and spreading goodness in all aspects of our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of truth and grant us success in this world and the hereafter.
