اَلمَرْءُ صَديقُ ما عَقَلَ۔
A person is the friend of what he understands.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
A person is the friend of what he understands.
This wise utterance highlights the importance of knowledge and understanding in forming meaningful relationships and connections.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (sadeeq) "صَديقُ" translates to "friend" in English. It refers to someone who is close, trustworthy, and supportive. The word (a'qala) "عَقَلَ" means "to understand" or "to comprehend." It signifies the intellectual capacity to grasp and comprehend knowledge.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and distinction in the sight of Allah.
Now, let us reflect on the connotation of the Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, teaches us that our friendships and relationships are shaped by our understanding. When we possess knowledge and understanding, we are able to connect with others on a deeper level. Our friendships become meaningful and beneficial, as we can offer support, guidance, and empathy based on our understanding.
For example, imagine a person who has studied psychology and understands the complexities of human emotions and behavior. This person will be able to empathize with others, offer valuable advice, and provide emotional support. Their knowledge and understanding make them a true friend to those around them.
Conversely, if we lack knowledge and understanding, our friendships may be superficial and shallow. We may struggle to connect with others on a deeper level, as we are unable to comprehend their experiences, perspectives, and struggles. Our relationships may lack depth and meaning, hindering our ability to provide genuine support and friendship.
Therefore, this Hadith serves as a reminder for us to seek knowledge and understanding in all aspects of our lives. By doing so, we can become true friends to others, offering them the support, guidance, and empathy they need. Let us strive to befriend knowledge and understanding, for they are the keys to meaningful relationships and a fulfilling life.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to be true friends to others, and may He bless us with the ability to seek knowledge and comprehend His guidance. Ameen.
