By the One who split the seed and created humankind, there will surely come forth amongst you a community that will strike the heads on the interpretation of the Qur’an just as Muhammad (s) began [conveying to you] its revelation, this is the decree from the Most Merciful upon you in the end of days.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he foretells the emergence of a community in the future that will distort the interpretation of the Qur'an. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by swearing an oath by Allah, the One who split the seed and created humankind, emphasizing the truthfulness and importance of his statement.

The phrase

there will surely come forth amongst you a community

refers to a group of people who will arise from within the Muslim ummah. These individuals will claim to interpret the Qur'an, but their interpretations will be misguided and deviant. They will distort the true meanings of the Qur'an and mislead others in their understanding of its teachings.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares this community to the time of Prophet Muhammad () when he first began to receive the revelation. Just as the Prophet () conveyed the Qur'an to the people in its true and authentic form, this community will twist its meanings and misinterpret its teachings.

The consequences of such distortion are severe. It leads to confusion, division, and the spread of false beliefs among Muslims. It undermines the unity and coherence of the ummah and hinders its progress and development. Moreover, it opens the door for misguidance and deviation from the true path of Islam.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Qur'an itself for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of misinterpreting His words and following deviant teachings. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says:

(Qur'an 3:7)

He it is Who has sent down to you the Book; in it are verses that are decisive in meaning - they are the foundation of the Book - and others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part of it that is allegorical, seeking discord and searching for its hidden meanings. But no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: 'We believe in it; the whole of it is from our Lord.' And none receive admonition except men of understanding.

This verse highlights the importance of approaching the Qur'an with knowledge and understanding. It cautions against following the allegorical verses without proper guidance, as it can lead to confusion and discord. The true believers, who are firmly grounded in knowledge, recognize the entirety of the Qur'an as the word of Allah and do not cherry-pick verses to suit their desires or agendas.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warning serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and discerning in their quest for knowledge and understanding of the Qur'an. It emphasizes the need to seek guidance from those who are knowledgeable and firmly grounded in the teachings of the Prophet () and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we can protect ourselves from falling into the trap of deviant interpretations and stay on the path of truth and righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timely reminder for Muslims to be cautious of those who distort the interpretation of the Qur'an. It highlights the importance of seeking knowledge from authentic sources and relying on the guidance of the Prophet () and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we can safeguard ourselves from falling into misguidance and ensure that our understanding of the Qur'an remains true and authentic. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from deviant interpretations and grant us the ability to comprehend His words in the best possible manner.
