(Ghurar al-Hikam: God-Wariness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of holding on to God-wariness, which is translated from the Arabic word (taqwa) "تَقْوَى". Taqwa is a comprehensive term that encompasses the fear of Allah, consciousness of His presence, and the avoidance of anything that displeases Him. It is a state of mind and heart that leads to righteous actions and a strong connection with Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes taqwa as having a rope with a firm handle and a stronghold with an insurmountable peak. This imagery highlights the strength and stability that taqwa provides in one's life. It serves as a means of guidance and protection, enabling individuals to navigate the challenges and trials of this world.

The concept of taqwa is emphasized throughout the Quran, and numerous verses support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 197:

For Hajj are the months well known. If anyone undertakes that duty therein, let there be no obscenity, nor wickedness, nor wrangling in the Hajj. And whatever good you do, (be sure) Allah knows it. And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best of provisions is taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding!

This verse highlights the importance of taqwa during the pilgrimage of Hajj, which is a physical manifestation of one's devotion to Allah. It emphasizes that the best provision for this journey is taqwa, as it encompasses all aspects of righteousness and piety.

Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13:

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous (muttaqi) of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that the most noble and honorable individuals in the sight of Allah are those who possess taqwa. It emphasizes that true superiority lies in righteousness and piety, rather than in worldly status or lineage.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize taqwa in their lives. By holding on to taqwa, individuals establish a strong connection with Allah and seek His pleasure above all else. This connection acts as a guiding light, leading them towards righteousness and protecting them from the pitfalls of sin and temptation.

Taqwa motivates individuals to strive for excellence in their worship, interactions, and character. It encourages them to fulfill their obligations and avoid any actions that may displease Allah. It serves as a constant reminder of His presence and accountability, instilling a sense of consciousness and mindfulness in every aspect of life.

The consequences of holding on to taqwa are profound. It leads to spiritual growth, inner peace, and a deepening of one's relationship with Allah. It enables individuals to make decisions based on moral values and principles, even in the face of adversity. Taqwa acts as a shield against evil and a source of strength during challenging times.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), Muslims are reminded to prioritize taqwa in their lives and strive to develop a strong connection with Allah. By doing so, they can navigate the complexities of this world with steadfastness and seek eternal success in the Hereafter. May Allah grant us the ability to hold on to taqwa and benefit from its blessings.
