The human being changes in three instances: when he is close to kings, when he gains positions of authority and when he becomes wealthy. So whoever does not change in these conditions, then he is one who possesses a strong intellect and an upright character.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Human Being)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the concept of change in human behavior under certain circumstances. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that a person undergoes transformation in three specific situations: when they are close to kings, when they gain positions of authority, and when they become wealthy. However, if an individual does not change in these conditions, it indicates that they possess a strong intellect and an upright character.

Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (taghayyar) "تَغَيَّرُ" means to change or transform. It signifies a shift in one's behavior, mindset, or attitude. The word (qurb) "قُرْبُ" refers to being close or in proximity to someone or something. In this context, it implies being in the presence of kings or those in positions of power. (wilayat) "وِلاياتُ" refers to positions of authority or leadership. Lastly, (ghina) "غَناءُ" means wealth or affluence.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining steadfastness and integrity in all situations, whether entering or leaving a position of power or wealth. It reminds us to seek strength and guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to remain steadfast in our character and conduct.

Another verse that sheds light on the concept of change is found in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children.

This verse highlights the transient nature of worldly possessions and the distractions they can bring. It serves as a reminder that material wealth and positions of authority should not lead us astray from the path of righteousness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this Hadith serves as a profound reflection on human nature and the potential pitfalls that can arise when one is exposed to power and wealth. When individuals are close to kings or those in positions of authority, they may be influenced by the allure of power and the desire to please those in authority. This can lead to compromising one's principles and values.

Similarly, when individuals gain positions of authority themselves, they may be tempted to abuse their power or become arrogant. This can result in a deviation from the path of justice and fairness. Likewise, when individuals become wealthy, they may be consumed by materialistic pursuits and neglect their spiritual and moral obligations.

However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that those who do not change in these circumstances are individuals of strong intellect and upright character. They possess the strength to resist the temptations and pressures that come with power and wealth. They remain steadfast in their principles, values, and moral compass, regardless of their external circumstances.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for inner strength and moral fortitude. It encourages us to remain steadfast in our character and conduct, regardless of the situations we find ourselves in. It reminds us to prioritize our faith and values over worldly gains and to seek guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the potential changes in human behavior when exposed to power, authority, and wealth. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a strong intellect and an upright character in the face of such circumstances. By reflecting on the Quranic verses and the profound wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), Muslims are reminded to prioritize their faith and values, and to seek guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to remain steadfast in all situations. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to navigate through the challenges of life while upholding our principles and values.
