Hadith #8936

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he beautifully describes the various components and functions of speech. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring the significance of each element mentioned and its connection to the Quranic teachings.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by stating that the heart is the place where speech is infixed. The heart, in this context, refers to the core of our being, the seat of our emotions, thoughts, and intentions. It is through the heart that words are deeply rooted and take hold. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Hajj (22:46), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind.

Next, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions that the mind serves as the repository of speech. The mind, or intellect, is responsible for storing and processing information. It is through the mind that we comprehend and analyze the words we hear or speak. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the role of the intellect in strengthening speech. The intellect enables us to reason, discern right from wrong, and make sound judgments. It empowers us to use our words wisely and effectively. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, We have created many of the jinn and mankind for Hellfire. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then mentions that the tongue is the initiator of speech. The tongue is the physical organ through which words are articulated and expressed. It is through the tongue that our thoughts and emotions find voice. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah An-Nahl (16:125), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further describes the form of speech as letters. Letters are the building blocks of language, and they come together to form words and sentences. This emphasizes the importance of proper pronunciation and articulation in effective communication. The Quranic verse in Surah Al-Qamar (54:17) highlights the significance of clear speech, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then states that the soul of speech is its meaning. The meaning behind our words carries weight and impact. It is through the meaning that our words convey messages, emotions, and ideas. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-An'am (6:112), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy - devils from mankind and jinn, inspiring to one another decorative speech in delusion. But if your Lord had willed, they would not have done it, so leave them and that which they invent.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also mentions that the adornment of speech is correct syntax. Syntax refers to the arrangement of words and phrases to create grammatically correct sentences. This highlights the importance of using proper grammar and structure in our speech. The Quranic verse in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4) emphasizes the eloquence of speech, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the order of speech is appositeness. Appositeness refers to the relevance and appropriateness of our words in different contexts. It is important to choose our words carefully and consider the impact they may have on others. The Quranic verse in Surah Al-A'raf (7:189) encourages us to speak with wisdom and consideration, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her. And when he covers her, she carries a light burden and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allah, their Lord,

If You should give us a good [child], we will surely be among the grateful."
