— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Matters)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic phrase in the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is "رُبَّما تَجَهَّمَتِ الأُمورُ". The word (tajahhamat) "تَجَهَّمَتِ" is derived from the root word (jahama) "جَهَمَ", which means to become grim or inescapable. It refers to a situation where matters seem difficult, challenging, or overwhelming.

To understand the essence of this hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286: (2:286)

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...

This verse assures us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not place a burden on us that is beyond our capabilities. Even when situations appear grim, we have the strength and resilience to face them.

Another verse that supports the meaning of this hadith is found in Surah Al-Inshirah, verse 5-6: (94:5-6)

Indeed, with hardship, there is relief. Indeed, with hardship, there is relief.

This verse emphasizes that after every difficulty, there is ease. It reminds us that even in the face of challenging circumstances, there is always a way out, a solution, or a relief waiting for us.

Now, let us delve deeper into the exegesis of this hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, is highlighting a fundamental truth of life. He is reminding us that there will be moments when matters may seem overwhelming, when we may feel trapped or helpless. However, it is crucial to remember that these moments are temporary and that they do not define our entire existence.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging us to have faith in Allah's wisdom and to trust in His plan. Just as the night is followed by the day, difficulties are followed by ease. This hadith teaches us to remain patient and steadfast during challenging times, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is always with us, guiding us towards a brighter future.

Furthermore, this hadith encourages us to seek solutions and take proactive steps to overcome difficulties. It reminds us that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, there are always options available to us. We should not lose hope or give in to despair, but rather, we should strive to find creative and constructive ways to navigate through the challenges we encounter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this teaching throughout his life. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he remained steadfast in his faith and never wavered in his commitment to justice and righteousness. His unwavering determination and deep understanding of Allah's mercy and guidance enabled him to overcome even the most difficult circumstances.

As Muslims, we can draw inspiration from this hadith and the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). We should remember that no matter how challenging a situation may appear, we have the strength and resilience to face it. We should trust in Allah's plan and seek His guidance, knowing that He will provide us with the means to overcome any difficulty.

In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of hope. It teaches us to have faith in Allah's wisdom and to trust in His plan. By remaining patient, proactive, and steadfast, we can navigate through the challenges of life and emerge stronger and more resilient. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to face every difficulty with grace and perseverance.
