Hadith #9423

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ ألَحَّ فِي السُّؤالِ أبْرَمَ۔

This can be translated as,

One who is importunate in asking irritates [people].

To understand the profound wisdom behind this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.

The word (alaha) "ألَحَّ" in Arabic refers to someone who persistently and continuously asks for something. It implies a sense of urgency and insistence in seeking what one desires. The word (fi) "فِي" means "in" or "within," indicating the context or manner in which the importunate asking takes place. Finally, the word (as-su'al) "السُّؤالِ" means "asking" or "requesting."

To shed light on the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse teaches us that Allah is aware of our needs and capabilities. He knows what is best for us and provides for us accordingly. Therefore, constantly and insistently asking for more may indicate a lack of trust in Allah's wisdom and a failure to recognize His perfect knowledge of our needs.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ghashiyah (88:21-22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

So remind, if the reminder should benefit; He who fears [Allah] will be reminded. But the wretched one will avoid it.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from those who possess it. However, it also emphasizes the need for sincerity and humility in seeking knowledge. Importunate asking, driven by selfish desires or a lack of respect for the knowledge and wisdom of others, can hinder the benefits of seeking guidance.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement cautions against the negative consequences of importunate asking. When someone persistently and continuously asks for something, it can lead to irritation and annoyance among those who are being asked. This behavior may strain relationships, create a negative atmosphere, and even damage one's own reputation. Importunate asking can also reflect a lack of patience and contentment, as it implies a sense of entitlement and dissatisfaction with what Allah has already provided.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom. His words were always rooted in the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Therefore, his statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their manners and etiquettes when seeking assistance or favors from others. It encourages us to approach others with respect, humility, and a sense of moderation in our requests.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to strike a balance between seeking what is necessary and being content with what Allah has already bestowed upon us. We should remember that Allah is the ultimate provider and that He knows what is best for us. Instead of persistently and continuously asking for more, we should turn to Allah in sincere supplication, seeking His guidance and blessings. We should also approach others with respect and consideration, understanding that their time and resources are limited.
