— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anger)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Anger is the conveyance of impetuosity.

This amazing Hadith highlights the negative consequences of anger and its association with hasty and impulsive actions. Let us delve deeper into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "ghadab" in Arabic refers to anger, while "markab" means conveyance or vehicle. The word "taysh" is translated as impetuosity, which signifies acting without careful thought or consideration. Thus, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing that anger serves as a vehicle that transports a person towards impulsive and reckless behavior.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that caution against the negative consequences of anger and the importance of controlling it. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134),

Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the virtue of restraining anger and pardoning others, as it is an act that is beloved to Allah.

Another verse in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199) states,

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant. And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.

This verse advises Muslims to turn away from ignorant and harmful behavior, which includes acting upon anger without careful consideration. Seeking refuge in Allah when confronted with anger is a means of seeking His guidance and protection.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand the detrimental consequences of acting impulsively out of anger. When we allow anger to control our actions, we often make decisions that we later regret. These decisions can harm our relationships, damage our reputation, and even lead to physical harm. By recognizing anger as a conveyance of impetuosity, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging us to exercise self-control and think rationally before acting upon our anger.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His ability to control his emotions, including anger, was a testament to his exemplary character. He understood the importance of maintaining composure and seeking guidance from Allah in times of anger. By following his teachings, we can strive to emulate his noble qualities and avoid the pitfalls of impulsive behavior.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to control their anger and avoid acting impulsively. The Quranic verses mentioned support this message, emphasizing the virtues of restraining anger and seeking refuge in Allah. By reflecting on the consequences of anger and the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive to cultivate patience, forgiveness, and rationality in our interactions with others. May Allah guide us in controlling our anger and grant us the ability to act with wisdom and compassion.
