كَثرَةُ الأكلِ والنَّوْمِ تُفْسِدانِ النَّفْسَ وتَجْلُبانِ المَضَرَّةَ۔
Overeating and oversleeping corrupt the soul and bring about impairment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Eating)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the detrimental effects of overeating and oversleeping. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (kathratu) "كَثْرَةُ" in the Hadith refers to excessive or abundant indulgence in something. In this context, it refers to the excessive consumption of food and the excessive amount of sleep. The word (al-akl) "الأكلِ" means eating, while (an-nawm) "النَّوْمِ" means sleep.
To understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement, we can turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) provides guidance on moderation in various aspects of life. Allah says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:31),
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
This verse emphasizes the importance of moderation in all aspects of life, including eating and drinking.
Excessive eating not only harms the physical body but also has a negative impact on the soul. The Quran states in Surah Al-A'raf (7:157),
And [mention] when Moses said to his people, 'Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.' They said, 'Do you take us in ridicule?' He said, 'I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.'
This incident highlights the consequences of indulging in excessive desires and gluttony. The people of Moses (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) questioned the command to slaughter a cow, displaying their lack of understanding and wisdom.
Overeating leads to the corruption of the soul as it promotes greed, selfishness, and a lack of self-control. It distracts us from fulfilling our spiritual obligations and weakens our connection with Allah. Allah warns us in Surah Al-Isra (17:37),
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.
This verse reminds us of the transitory nature of this world and the importance of humility. Excessive indulgence in worldly desires, including food, can lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
Similarly, oversleeping can also have detrimental effects on our physical and spiritual well-being. While sleep is a natural and necessary part of life, excessive sleep can lead to laziness, wasted time, and a lack of productivity. Allah says in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:37),
Man was created of haste. I will show you My signs, so do not impatiently urge Me.
This verse reminds us of the importance of utilizing our time wisely and not wasting it in excessive sleep or idleness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, advises us to avoid overeating and oversleeping to protect our souls from corruption and impairment. By practicing moderation in our eating habits and ensuring a balanced sleep schedule, we can maintain a healthy body and a sound mind, enabling us to fulfill our responsibilities and worship Allah with sincerity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid excessive indulgence in food and sleep. By following the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt, we can strive for moderation in all aspects of our lives, leading to a balanced and fulfilling spiritual journey. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to practice moderation and protect our souls from corruption.
