(Ghurar al-Hikam: Contentment And The Contented)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The goodness of contentment stems from continence.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.
Firstly, (husn al-qana'ah) "حُسْنُ القَناعَةِ" refers to the goodness or beauty of contentment. Contentment is the state of being satisfied and grateful with what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us, both in terms of material possessions and life circumstances. It is the opposite of greed, envy, and constant desire for more.
Secondly, (min al-'iffah) "مِنَ العَفافِ" translates to "stems from continence." Continence refers to self-restraint and moderation in desires and actions. It involves controlling one's impulses and avoiding excessiveness in pursuit of worldly pleasures. It is a quality that helps in maintaining a balanced and disciplined approach to life.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.
This verse emphasizes the importance of relying on Allah and being content with what He has provided while also taking necessary provisions for our worldly needs. The true provision lies in having Taqwa (God-consciousness) and a deep understanding of the purpose of life.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse highlights the balance between seeking the rewards of the Hereafter and not neglecting our responsibilities in this world. It encourages us to utilize the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to do good and avoid corruption. Contentment plays a crucial role in maintaining this balance, as it prevents us from becoming consumed by worldly desires and losing sight of our ultimate purpose.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes that true contentment stems from practicing continence. When we exercise self-restraint and moderation, we are able to appreciate and be grateful for what we have, rather than constantly yearning for more. This contentment brings peace and tranquility to our hearts and allows us to focus on fulfilling our spiritual obligations and seeking closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Moreover, contentment and continence have far-reaching consequences in our lives. When we are content, we are less likely to engage in unethical or unlawful means to acquire wealth or fulfill our desires. This leads to a society that is characterized by justice, honesty, and integrity. Contentment also fosters a sense of gratitude, which in turn attracts more blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strengthens our relationship with Him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of contentment and continence. It reminds us to be grateful for what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has blessed us with and to exercise self-restraint in our desires and actions. By embodying these qualities, we can attain inner peace, maintain a balanced approach to life, and fulfill our spiritual obligations while also enjoying the blessings of this world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to cultivate contentment and continence in our lives.
