ذَرِ الطَّمَعَ، والشَّرَهَ، وعَلَيْكَ بِلُزُومِ العِفَّةِ، والوَرَعِ۔
Abandon covetousness and greediness and cling to chastity and piety.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Covetousness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of abandoning covetousness and greediness, and instead, focusing on two virtues: chastity and piety. Let us delve into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
Firstly, (الطَّمَعَ) "covetousness" refers to an intense desire for wealth, possessions, or power. It is a state of being consumed by greed and an insatiable longing for more. This Hadith advises Muslims to abandon such a mindset, as it leads to discontentment, injustice, and a neglect of spiritual growth.
The Quran supports this teaching in multiple verses. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And those who came after them say, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.'
This verse highlights the importance of contentment and the avoidance of resentment towards others. Covetousness can lead to envy and ill feelings towards those who possess what we desire, which is contrary to the teachings of Islam.
Secondly, (الشَّرَهَ) "greediness" refers to an excessive desire for food, drink, or any worldly pleasure. It is a state of indulgence and gluttony, where one prioritizes their physical desires over their spiritual well-being. This Hadith advises Muslims to abandon such behavior and instead adopt moderation and self-control.
The Quran also emphasizes the importance of moderation and self-control. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
This verse encourages Muslims to enjoy the blessings of this world but warns against excessive indulgence. Greediness leads to a neglect of one's spiritual obligations and can lead to harmful consequences for both individuals and society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then advises Muslims to (العِفَّةِ) "cling to chastity". Chastity refers to purity and modesty in one's thoughts, actions, and interactions. It encompasses guarding one's modesty, avoiding illicit relationships, and maintaining purity in all aspects of life.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of chastity. In Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
This verse highlights the need for Muslims, both men and women, to lower their gaze and protect their modesty. Chastity is a virtue that safeguards individuals and societies from moral corruption and promotes healthy relationships based on respect and honor.
Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to (الوَرَعِ) "cling to piety". Piety refers to a state of righteousness, consciousness of Allah, and adherence to His commands. It involves fulfilling one's religious obligations, avoiding sinful acts, and constantly striving to improve one's character and relationship with Allah.
The Quran extensively discusses the concept of piety. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do - Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is piety. So fear Me, O you of understanding.
This verse highlights the importance of piety during the pilgrimage of Hajj, but its message extends to all aspects of life. Piety is the best provision for the journey of life, as it brings one closer to Allah and guides them towards righteous actions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to abandon covetousness and greediness and instead focus on chastity and piety. These virtues are essential for spiritual growth, personal well-being, and the betterment of society. By avoiding covetousness and greediness, Muslims can cultivate contentment and gratitude. By embracing chastity, they can uphold purity and honor in their relationships. And by clinging to piety, they can strengthen their connection with Allah and strive for righteousness in all aspects of life. May Allah guide us all to embody these virtues and grant us success in this world and the hereafter.
