يَسيرُ الأمَلِ يُوجِبُ فَسادَ العَمَلِ۔
The smallest of hopes leads to corruption of actions.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hopes And Aspirations)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
يَسيرُ الأمَلِ يُوجِبُ فَسادَ العَمَلِ
which translates to
The smallest of hopes leads to corruption of actions.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of having pure intentions and sincere actions in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words used. The word (amal) "أمَلِ" refers to hope or expectation. It signifies the desires and aspirations that individuals hold within themselves. The word (fasad) "فَسادَ" means corruption or decay. It implies the deterioration or spoiling of something that was once pure or righteous. And the word (amal) "عَمَلِ" refers to actions or deeds.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find verses that support and provide insight into this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:61),
And He is the One who made for you the night as a covering and the sleep as a rest and made the day for livelihood.
This verse reminds us that Allah has blessed us with the night for rest and rejuvenation, and the day for productivity and sustenance. It implies that our actions during the day should be purposeful and beneficial.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Wealth and children are the adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
This verse emphasizes the importance of focusing on enduring good deeds that will bring us closer to Allah and secure a better future in the hereafter. It reminds us that our hopes and aspirations should be directed towards the eternal rewards promised by Allah.
Now, let us delve into the essence of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. The Hadith teaches us that even the smallest of hopes, if not aligned with sincere and righteous actions, can lead to corruption. This highlights the significance of having pure intentions and ensuring that our actions are in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
For example, if someone hopes for success in their career but resorts to dishonest means to achieve it, their actions become corrupted. Similarly, if someone hopes for forgiveness and mercy from Allah, but does not strive to fulfill their religious obligations or engage in sinful behavior, their hopes become futile.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that our hopes and aspirations should be rooted in righteousness and guided by the principles of Islam. It encourages us to reflect on the intentions behind our actions and ensure that they are sincere and pleasing to Allah.
Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the importance of self-accountability. We should constantly evaluate our intentions and actions to ensure that they are aligned with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can avoid falling into the trap of corrupting our actions due to misguided hopes and desires.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the significance of having pure intentions and sincere actions. It cautions us against allowing even the smallest of hopes to lead to corruption in our deeds. By aligning our hopes and aspirations with the teachings of Islam and constantly evaluating our intentions, we can strive towards righteousness and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to the straight path and grant us success in this life and the hereafter.
