عَلامَةُ العَيِّ تَكْرارُ الكَلامِ عِنْدَ المُناظَرَةِ، وكَثْرَةُ التَّبَجُّجِ عِنْدَ المُحاوَرَةِ۔
The sign of inarticulateness is repeating oneself during a debate and increased excitement during conversation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Inarticulateness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights two signs of inarticulateness or lack of eloquence during debates and conversations. The first sign mentioned is the repetition of one's words during a debate, indicating a lack of clarity and coherence in one's argument. The second sign is the excessive excitement or agitation that one displays during a conversation, which can hinder effective communication and understanding.
To understand the significance of this hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of clear and effective communication in several verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:83)
And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah
This verse encourages Muslims to speak in a manner that is beneficial and respectful, reflecting the importance of articulating one's thoughts effectively.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa, Allah states, (Quran 49:11)
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames
This verse highlights the importance of respectful and considerate communication, discouraging any form of mockery or offensive language.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith aligns with these Quranic teachings by emphasizing the need for clarity, coherence, and composure in our speech. When engaging in debates or conversations, it is essential to express our thoughts in a concise and organized manner, avoiding unnecessary repetition. By doing so, we can effectively convey our message and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Repeating oneself during a debate can indicate a lack of preparation, knowledge, or confidence in one's argument. It may also reflect a failure to understand the opposing viewpoint and respond appropriately. Such repetition can lead to confusion and a loss of credibility, hindering the progress of the discussion.
Similarly, excessive excitement or agitation during a conversation can cloud one's judgment and hinder effective communication. When we become overly emotional, our ability to listen attentively and respond thoughtfully may be compromised. This can lead to misunderstandings, arguments, and a breakdown in communication.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on these signs of inarticulateness serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for eloquence and clarity in their speech. It encourages us to engage in debates and conversations with composure, knowledge, and a deep understanding of the subject matter. By doing so, we can foster a culture of respectful and effective communication within the Muslim community and beyond.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith highlights the importance of clear and coherent communication during debates and conversations. It reminds us to avoid repeating ourselves excessively and to maintain composure and attentiveness in our interactions. By adhering to these principles, we can enhance our ability to convey our thoughts effectively, understand others, and foster meaningful dialogue. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and eloquence to communicate in a manner that pleases Him and benefits our fellow Muslims.
