— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Writing)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الخَطُّ لِسانُ اليَدِ۔" This Hadith emphasizes the importance of writing and its ability to convey messages and ideas. The word (al-khattu) "الخَطُّ" refers to writing, while (lisānu) "لِسانُ" means tongue, and (al-yadi) "اليَدِ" means hand.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Qalam (Chapter 68), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) praises the pen as a means of knowledge and communication. Allah says in verse 1,

Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe.

This verse highlights the importance of writing and the knowledge it imparts.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Alaq (Chapter 96), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands the Prophet Muhammad () to read and write. Allah says in verses 1-5,

Read in the name of your Lord who created - created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous - who taught by the pen - taught man that which he knew not.

These verses emphasize the significance of literacy and the acquisition of knowledge through writing.

Now, let us delve deeper into the exegesis of the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the power of writing as a form of expression and communication. Just as the tongue is a tool for conveying thoughts and ideas, writing serves the same purpose. It allows us to articulate our thoughts, preserve knowledge, and transmit it to others.

Writing has played a crucial role in the preservation and transmission of religious teachings. The Quran itself is a written revelation, and its preservation in written form ensures its accessibility to Muslims across generations. Through writing, the words of Allah and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () have been safeguarded and passed down to us.

Moreover, writing enables us to document our experiences, thoughts, and reflections. It allows us to express ourselves creatively, share knowledge, and inspire others. Through the written word, we can leave a lasting impact on society and contribute to the intellectual and spiritual development of humanity.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also reminds us of the responsibility that comes with writing. Just as the tongue can be used for both good and evil, the power of the written word should be wielded with wisdom and integrity. We must use our writing skills to promote truth, justice, and righteousness, and to combat falsehood and ignorance.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of writing as a means of communication and expression. It reminds us of the power and responsibility that comes with the written word. As Muslims, we should strive to develop our writing skills and use them to convey knowledge, inspire others, and contribute positively to society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to utilize the gift of writing for the betterment of ourselves and humanity.
