ضادُّوا الحِرصَ بِالقُنُوعِ۔
Counter greed with contentment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Greed)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "ضادُّوا الحِرصَ بِالقُنُوعِ۔" This can be translated as
Counter greed with contentment.
In this amazing Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to combat the destructive nature of greed by embracing contentment.
To fully comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (al-hirs) "الحِرصَ" refers to an intense desire or greed for worldly possessions, power, or status. It is a state of constantly wanting more and never being satisfied. On the other hand, (al-qunūʿ) "القُنُوعِ" signifies contentment, which is the state of being satisfied and grateful with what one has, without longing for more.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of contentment and warn against the dangers of greed. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:96):
And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allah. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.
This verse highlights the insatiable nature of greed and its ability to blind individuals from the reality of the Hereafter. It warns Muslims against becoming consumed by worldly desires, as it ultimately leads to spiritual and moral decay.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Takathur (102:1-2):
Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you until you visit the graveyards. No! You are going to know. Then, no! You are going to know. No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty... You will surely see the Hellfire. Then you will surely see it with the eye of certainty.
This verse serves as a reminder that the pursuit of worldly possessions and wealth can distract us from our ultimate purpose in life. It warns us that the graveyards will be our final destination, and it is in the Hereafter that the true consequences of our actions will be revealed.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to counter greed with contentment holds immense wisdom. Greed can lead to a multitude of negative consequences, both on an individual and societal level. It breeds envy, selfishness, and a disregard for the rights of others. It can also lead to an insatiable desire for power and wealth, causing individuals to engage in unethical and immoral behavior.
On the other hand, contentment is a virtue that brings peace and tranquility to the heart. It allows us to appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and be grateful for what we have. Contentment does not mean complacency or stagnation; rather, it encourages us to strive for excellence while being satisfied with the outcome, knowing that it is ultimately in the hands of Allah.
By practicing contentment, we can break free from the never-ending cycle of greed and materialism. We can find solace in the simplicity of life and focus on cultivating our spiritual well-being. Contentment enables us to prioritize our relationships, our character development, and our pursuit of knowledge, rather than being consumed by the pursuit of worldly possessions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to counter the destructive nature of greed with contentment. It urges us to reflect on the dangers of excessive desire for worldly possessions and to strive for a state of satisfaction and gratitude. By embracing contentment, we can attain inner peace and spiritual growth, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and purposeful life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of contentment and protect us from the pitfalls of greed.
