— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الظُّلْمُ يُدَمِّرُ الدِّيارَ۔" This powerful statement translates to "Injustice destroys homes." Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this profound Hadith in light of the teachings of the Quran.

The word (zulm) "ظلم" in Arabic refers to injustice, oppression, or wrongdoing. It encompasses any act that transgresses the boundaries of fairness and equity. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of injustice, emphasizing that it leads to the destruction of homes.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly condemns injustice and oppression, and He promises severe consequences for those who perpetrate it. In Surah Al-Anfal, verse 25, Allah says,

And fear the trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

This verse serves as a reminder that injustice will not go unpunished, and Allah's punishment is severe.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 32, Allah states,

Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.

This verse highlights the sanctity of human life and the gravity of causing harm or injustice to others. It emphasizes the importance of preserving and protecting the rights of individuals, as doing so is equivalent to saving all of humanity.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith draws our attention to the destructive consequences of injustice. When injustice prevails in a society or within the confines of a home, it erodes the foundations of peace, harmony, and stability. Injustice breeds resentment, anger, and division among people, leading to the disintegration of relationships and the breakdown of families.

Imagine a household where injustice prevails. The head of the family, instead of fulfilling their responsibilities with fairness and compassion, oppresses their dependents. This could manifest in various forms, such as neglecting their needs, denying them their rights, or subjecting them to abuse. Such an environment is bound to be filled with tension, fear, and unhappiness. The bonds that hold a family together are weakened, and eventually, the home becomes a place of turmoil and despair.

Conversely, a home that upholds justice and fairness becomes a sanctuary of love, tranquility, and happiness. When the head of the family fulfills their role with justice, they create an atmosphere of trust, respect, and harmony. Each member feels valued and protected, and their rights are safeguarded. This fosters a sense of belonging and unity, strengthening the family bonds and ensuring the well-being of all its members.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) wise utterance serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of justice in all aspects of life. It is incumbent upon us to strive for justice in our interactions with others, whether it be within our families, communities, or society at large. By doing so, we contribute to the establishment of a just and equitable society, where homes are built on the solid foundation of justice, and peace prevails.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to uphold justice in our lives and protect us from the destructive consequences of injustice. May He grant us the wisdom and strength to establish homes filled with love, compassion, and fairness. And may we always seek His forgiveness and mercy in our pursuit of justice.
