I have patched this shirt of mine so much that I am now ashamed of [taking it again to] the tailor. Someone asked me: Will you not discard it? I replied: Get away from me! Only at dawn do people speak highly of the [arduous] night journey.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes the state of his armor, which he has patched so much that he feels ashamed to take it to the tailor again. The Imam's armor symbolizes his steadfastness and resilience in the face of challenges and hardships. Despite the wear and tear, he continues to rely on it, indicating his unwavering commitment to his principles and his determination to fulfill his responsibilities.
The Imam's response to the person who suggests discarding the armor is significant. He firmly tells the person to
get away from me!
This response reflects the Imam's unwavering faith and determination to persevere, even when faced with adversity. He recognizes that it is during the darkest and most difficult times that true believers are tested and their worth is truly known.
To understand the deeper meaning of this hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286: (2:286)
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that Allah knows our capabilities and does not burden us with challenges that are beyond our capacity to handle. It is through these trials that we are able to grow and strengthen our faith.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (29:2)
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse emphasizes that trials and difficulties are an integral part of our journey as Muslims. They test our sincerity and commitment to our faith, and they provide us with opportunities for growth and self-improvement.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) analogy of the patched armor can be understood in the context of these Quranic verses. Just as the armor has been patched repeatedly, symbolizing the trials and challenges faced by the Imam, so too are believers tested and tried in their faith. The Imam's refusal to discard the armor signifies his unwavering commitment to his principles and his determination to face any challenge that comes his way.
The Imam's mention of the dawn in his response is also significant. The dawn represents the end of darkness and the beginning of a new day. It is a time of hope and renewal. Similarly, the Imam reminds us that after every difficult and challenging period, there is a new beginning, where believers are praised for their perseverance and steadfastness.
In conclusion, this hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in the face of trials and challenges. It teaches us the importance of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to our faith. Just as the Imam continues to rely on his patched armor, we too should embrace our difficulties and use them as opportunities for growth and self-improvement. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and courage to face our trials with patience and steadfastness.
