Adopting a good character is the best [means of following the] religion.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Adopting a good character is the best [means of following the] religion.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the significance of cultivating virtuous qualities and embodying noble characteristics in Islam. Let us delve deeper into the exegesis of this hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "husn" in Arabic refers to beauty, goodness, and excellence. It encompasses all positive attributes and virtues that contribute to a person's moral and ethical conduct. "Khuluq" refers to character, encompassing one's behavior, manners, and disposition. Therefore, the hadith emphasizes the importance of nurturing and developing a good character as it is the pinnacle of religious practice.
The Quran supports this notion by repeatedly highlighting the significance of good character. In Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as having "exalted character." This verse serves as a testament to the Prophet's (ﷺ) impeccable conduct and serves as a model for all Muslims to emulate.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that true nobility and superiority lie not in one's lineage or wealth but in their righteousness and good character.
The consequences of adopting a good character are far-reaching. A person with a good character becomes a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Their actions and words reflect the beauty and essence of Islam, attracting others towards the religion. This hadith encourages Muslims to prioritize the development of their character, as it is through their conduct that they can effectively convey the message of Islam to others.
Moreover, a good character fosters harmonious relationships within society. It promotes empathy, kindness, and compassion, leading to a peaceful coexistence among individuals. The Quran emphasizes the importance of maintaining good relations with others in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), stating,
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
By embodying a good character, Muslims contribute to the establishment of a just and compassionate society.
Reflecting on this hadith, we can draw inspiration from the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself. Known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified the highest standards of character. His humility, patience, and justice were renowned, and his actions continue to serve as a guiding light for Muslims.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of adopting a good character as the best way to practice and embody the teachings of Islam. It reminds Muslims that their conduct and behavior play a vital role in representing the religion to others. By nurturing virtuous qualities and embodying noble characteristics, Muslims can contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill their religious obligations. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate a good character and follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble family.
