How great a loser is the one for whom there is no share in the Hereafter!

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Hereafter)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ما أخْسَرَ مَنْ لَيْسَ لَهُ في الآخِرَةِ نَصيبٌ۔

This profound statement emphasizes the significance of having a share in the Hereafter. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (akhsara) "أخْسَرَ" in this Hadith means

to be a great loser

or

to suffer a great loss.

It implies that the person being referred to has missed out on something of immense value. The word (naseeb) "نَصيبٌ" means "share" or "portion." It signifies the portion or share that one receives as a result of their actions and beliefs.

To understand the depth of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:185),

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse highlights the ultimate compensation that awaits us in the Hereafter. It emphasizes that the true reward for our deeds will be granted on the Day of Resurrection. Those who are saved from the torment of the Fire and are admitted to Paradise have indeed achieved their desired share in the Hereafter. Conversely, those who have no share in the Hereafter are the ones who will suffer a great loss.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:103-104), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Say, 'Shall We inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds? [They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work.'

These verses highlight the concept of being a great loser in the Hereafter. It points out that the greatest losers are those who put their efforts solely into worldly matters, neglecting the importance of their spiritual growth and the Hereafter. They mistakenly believe that they are successful in their worldly pursuits, but in reality, they have lost sight of their true purpose and have no share in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their actions and beliefs in accordance with the teachings of the Quran. It urges us to reflect on our choices and ensure that we are not neglecting our spiritual growth and the Hereafter. By doing so, we can avoid being among the great losers and instead secure our share in the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.

This Hadith also highlights the profound knowledge and wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His deep understanding of the Quran and his ability to convey its teachings in concise and impactful statements is a testament to his exceptional knowledge and piety.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of having a share in the Hereafter. It warns us against being consumed by worldly pursuits and neglecting our spiritual growth. By aligning our actions and beliefs with the teachings of the Quran, we can avoid being among the great losers and secure our place in the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the righteous path and grant us a share in the Hereafter.
