تَحَلَّ بِالسَّخاءِ والوَرَعِ فَهُما حِلْيَةُ الإيمانِ وأشْرَفُ خِلالِكَ۔
Adorn yourself with generosity and piety, for these two are the embellishments of faith and the most honourable of your traits.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the virtues of generosity and piety, stating that they are the adornments of faith and the most honorable qualities one can possess. Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith and explore their significance in the light of the Quran.
The first word to examine is (sakhā') "سَخَاء". It refers to generosity, liberality, and the act of giving without expecting anything in return. The concept of generosity is highly regarded in Islam and is encouraged throughout the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261):
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the immense rewards and blessings that come with being generous and spending in the cause of Allah.
The second word is (wara') "وَرَع". It refers to piety, righteousness, and being conscious of Allah's commands. Piety is a fundamental aspect of faith and is repeatedly emphasized in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13):
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true honor and nobility lie in righteousness and piety, rather than in worldly possessions or social status.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) combines these two virtues, generosity and piety, and describes them as the adornments of faith. Just as jewelry enhances the beauty of a person, generosity and piety enhance the beauty and strength of one's faith. When a person is generous, they reflect the attributes of Allah, who is the Most Generous. Similarly, when a person is pious, they demonstrate their obedience and devotion to Allah, which strengthens their faith.
The Hadith also states that these qualities are the most honorable traits one can possess. This is because generosity and piety have far-reaching effects on an individual and society. Generosity not only benefits the recipient but also purifies the heart of the giver, fostering a sense of empathy and compassion. Piety, on the other hand, guides a person's actions and decisions, ensuring that they are in accordance with the teachings of Islam. It protects one from sin and leads to a righteous and fulfilling life.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can see that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of embodying these virtues in our daily lives. By being generous and pious, we not only strengthen our faith but also contribute to the betterment of society. Our generosity can alleviate the suffering of others, while our piety can serve as a guiding light for those around us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the significance of generosity and piety in Islam. These qualities adorn our faith and elevate our character. Let us strive to cultivate these virtues within ourselves, following the examples set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be generous and pious, and may He bless us with the honor and rewards that come with these traits.
