اَلعادَةُ طَبْعُ ثان۔
Habit is second nature.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Habit)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-'adatu tab'u than." This concise statement translates to
Habit is second nature.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this saying, let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word (عَادَةُ) "adah" refers to a habit or a customary practice that becomes ingrained in a person's behavior. It is a recurring action that becomes second nature to an individual. This word emphasizes the repetitive nature of an action and its ability to shape one's character.
The word (طَبْعُ) "tab'" means nature or disposition. It refers to the inherent qualities and characteristics that define a person's behavior and personality. It is the essence of an individual's being.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully states that
habit is second nature.
This thought-provoking saying highlights the power of habit in shaping our character and behavior. It suggests that our actions, when repeated consistently, become deeply ingrained within us, ultimately becoming a part of our nature.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 56: (Quran 28:56)
Indeed, you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
This verse reminds us that guidance ultimately comes from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). However, it is our consistent actions and habits that determine whether we are deserving of His guidance. If we continuously engage in righteous deeds, seeking His pleasure, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will guide us on the right path.
Another verse that supports the wisdom of Imam Ali's statement is found in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80: (Quran 17:80)
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of consistency in our actions. When we strive to establish good habits and maintain them, we are asking Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to grant us the strength and steadfastness to continue on the right path. It is through our consistent efforts that we can achieve a firm and unwavering faith.
Imam Ali's statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their habits and actions. It emphasizes the importance of cultivating good habits and avoiding harmful ones. Our habits shape our character and ultimately define who we are as individuals. By consciously choosing to engage in righteous actions and avoiding sinful ones, we can mold our nature to be in alignment with the teachings of Islam.
For example, if a person consistently performs acts of kindness and generosity, it becomes second nature for them to be compassionate and charitable. On the other hand, if a person consistently engages in dishonesty and deceit, it becomes second nature for them to be untrustworthy and deceitful. Our habits have a profound impact on our character and the way we interact with others.
Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a motivation for Muslims to reflect on their daily routines and habits. It encourages us to assess whether our actions align with the teachings of Islam and whether they contribute to our spiritual growth. By being mindful of our habits, we can consciously strive to develop positive traits and eliminate negative ones.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Habit is second nature
highlights the power of consistent actions in shaping our character and behavior. It reminds us of the importance of cultivating good habits and avoiding harmful ones. By reflecting on our daily routines and striving to align our actions with the teachings of Islam, we can mold our nature to be in accordance with the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to develop positive habits and become better Muslims.
