مَنْ لا أمانَةَ لَهُ لا إيمانَ لَهُ۔
One who has no trustworthiness has no faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Trustworthiness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ لا أمانَةَ لَهُ لا إيمانَ لَهُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
One who has no trustworthiness has no faith.
Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (amānah) "أمانَةَ" in this Hadith refers to trustworthiness, honesty, and fulfilling one's responsibilities. It encompasses the idea of being reliable, dependable, and true to one's word. Trustworthiness is a fundamental quality that is highly emphasized in Islam, as it forms the basis of a just and harmonious society.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness in the Quran. In Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 1, Allah says,
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
This verse highlights the obligation of fulfilling contracts and agreements, which is a manifestation of trustworthiness. By honoring our commitments, we demonstrate our faith and integrity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 34, Allah says,
And fulfill every commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
This verse reminds us that our commitments and responsibilities will be questioned on the Day of Judgment. It serves as a reminder that trustworthiness is not only a social obligation but also a spiritual duty.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
One who has no trustworthiness has no faith,
highlights the inseparable connection between trustworthiness and faith. Trustworthiness is not merely an external quality; it is deeply rooted in one's faith and belief in Allah. A person who lacks trustworthiness demonstrates a deficiency in their faith and spirituality.
When we examine the consequences of a lack of trustworthiness, we find that it leads to a breakdown of trust in relationships, communities, and societies. Trust is the foundation upon which relationships are built, and without it, there can be no harmony or cooperation. A person who is known for being untrustworthy will find it difficult to establish meaningful connections with others and will face isolation and suspicion.
Moreover, a lack of trustworthiness has spiritual consequences as well. It weakens our relationship with Allah and diminishes the sincerity of our worship. When we fail to fulfill our responsibilities and betray the trust of others, we are essentially betraying the trust that Allah has placed in us as His servants. This betrayal erodes the strength of our faith and distances us from the path of righteousness.
On the other hand, a person who upholds trustworthiness demonstrates a strong faith and a deep sense of responsibility. They are reliable and dependable in their actions and words. Trustworthy individuals are respected and admired, and their presence brings stability and harmony to their communities.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for all Muslims to reflect upon their own trustworthiness. We must strive to be people of integrity, fulfilling our commitments and responsibilities with sincerity and honesty. By doing so, we strengthen our faith and contribute to the establishment of a just and trustworthy society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
One who has no trustworthiness has no faith
emphasizes the inseparable connection between trustworthiness and faith. Trustworthiness is a fundamental quality that is deeply rooted in our faith and belief in Allah. It is not only a social obligation but also a spiritual duty. By upholding trustworthiness, we strengthen our faith, build harmonious relationships, and contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah guide us all to be trustworthy individuals who embody the teachings of Islam.
