مِنَ الكَرَمِ حُسْنُ الشِّيَمِ۔
It is part of nobleness to have good [and praiseworthy] traits.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Nobleness And Munificence)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
It is part of nobleness to have good [and praiseworthy] traits.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of possessing virtuous qualities and characteristics. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "karām" in Arabic refers to nobleness, generosity, and honor. It encompasses the idea of possessing noble qualities and behaving in an honorable manner. The word "shiyam" refers to traits or characteristics. Thus, the Hadith encourages Muslims to cultivate and exhibit good and praiseworthy traits as a manifestation of their nobility.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the significance of good character and noble traits. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4),
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
This verse highlights the exemplary character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who serves as a role model for all Muslims. It demonstrates that possessing good traits is not only commendable but also a fundamental aspect of faith.
Furthermore, the Quran states in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true nobility lies in righteousness and piety, rather than in wealth, lineage, or worldly status. It reinforces the idea that good traits are essential for attaining true honor and nobleness in the sight of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that our actions and behavior reflect our inner character. It is not enough to merely claim nobility or possess external attributes of honor. True nobleness lies in the cultivation of virtuous traits such as kindness, honesty, patience, humility, and forgiveness.
For instance, a person who possesses the trait of kindness will treat others with compassion and empathy. They will go out of their way to help those in need, regardless of their social status or background. This trait is exemplified in the Quran when Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the believers as those who (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:177)
spend their wealth for the love of Him, on the poor and the orphan and the captive
This verse highlights the importance of kindness and generosity towards those who are less fortunate.
Similarly, the trait of honesty is highly valued in Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both.
This verse emphasizes the importance of honesty and integrity, even in difficult circumstances. A person with this trait will always speak the truth, even if it is against their own interests.
The consequences of possessing good traits are far-reaching. Not only do they earn the admiration and respect of others, but they also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. When individuals embody noble qualities, they inspire others to follow suit, creating a positive ripple effect. Moreover, possessing good traits strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and increases our chances of attaining His pleasure and mercy.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. It is incumbent upon us, as Muslims, to strive towards developing and nurturing good traits in ourselves. By doing so, we can fulfill our purpose of worshiping Allah and embodying the noble teachings of Islam.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and exhibit good traits, and may He make us among those who are truly noble in His sight.
