Peace of mind is in abstinence from worldly pleasures.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Peace Of Mind)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الرَّاحَةُ فِي الزُّهدِ" which translates to

Peace of mind is in abstinence from worldly pleasures.

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of detaching oneself from the materialistic desires of this world in order to attain true tranquility and inner peace.

To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and the need to prioritize the eternal rewards of the hereafter. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 3:14)

Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return

This verse reminds us that although worldly possessions may bring temporary pleasure, they are transient and fleeting. True peace and contentment lie in seeking the pleasure of Allah and focusing on the eternal rewards that await us in the hereafter. By detaching ourselves from the materialistic desires of this world, we free ourselves from the constant pursuit of worldly pleasures, which often lead to anxiety, dissatisfaction, and a lack of inner peace.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the concept of "zuhd" or abstinence. Zuhd refers to voluntarily refraining from indulging in excessive worldly pleasures and instead focusing on the spiritual aspects of life. It does not mean complete renunciation of worldly affairs, but rather a detachment from the love and attachment to material possessions.

The Quran further emphasizes the importance of zuhd in several verses. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah says, (Quran 57:20)

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris

This verse beautifully illustrates the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures and the temporary satisfaction they bring. Just as plants wither and decay, so do the material possessions and desires of this world. True peace and contentment can only be found by redirecting our focus towards the worship of Allah and the pursuit of righteous deeds.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being over worldly pursuits. By practicing zuhd, we can free ourselves from the constant chase for material possessions and instead focus on nurturing our souls and developing a strong connection with Allah. This does not mean that we should neglect our responsibilities in this world, but rather that we should approach them with a mindset of detachment and moderation.

When we detach ourselves from the love of worldly pleasures, we become less affected by the ups and downs of life. Our contentment is no longer dependent on external circumstances, but rather on our relationship with Allah. This inner peace and tranquility allow us to face challenges with patience and gratitude, knowing that our ultimate reward lies in the hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

Peace of mind is in abstinence from worldly pleasures

reminds us of the importance of detaching ourselves from the materialistic desires of this world. By practicing zuhd and redirecting our focus towards the worship of Allah, we can attain true peace and contentment. May Allah guide us all to prioritize our spiritual well-being and grant us the strength to detach ourselves from the temporary allure of worldly pleasures.
