(Ghurar al-Hikam: Virtues And Vices)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights two important virtues that are essential for every human being: safeguarding the tongue and doing good to others. Let us delve into the meanings and implications of these virtues in light of the Quran.

The word (safeguarding) "حِفْظُ" in the Hadith refers to protecting and preserving something. In this context, it refers to guarding one's tongue from uttering falsehood, backbiting, slander, and any form of harmful speech. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of controlling our speech in several verses of the Quran.

In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:36)

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse reminds us that we will be held accountable for our words, and therefore, we must be cautious about what we say.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam, Allah advises Prophet Muhammad () saying, (Quran 68:48)

And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.

This verse teaches us to respond to negative speech with patience and kindness, rather than engaging in harmful exchanges.

The second virtue mentioned in the Hadith is (doing good to others) "بَذْلُ الإحْسانِ". This encompasses acts of kindness, generosity, and benevolence towards fellow human beings. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of performing acts of goodness and charity.

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:263)

Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury. And Allah is Free of need and Forbearing.

This verse highlights the superiority of kind words and forgiveness over mere material charity. It reminds us that our actions should be accompanied by a sincere intention and a spirit of benevolence.

Moreover, in Surah Al-Ma'un, Allah condemns those who neglect acts of kindness and charity, saying, (Quran 107:4-7)

So woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer - those who make show [of their deeds] and withhold [simple] assistance.

This verse emphasizes that true righteousness is not limited to ritualistic acts of worship but also includes helping and assisting others.

The consequences of practicing these virtues are profound. Safeguarding the tongue prevents us from causing harm to others, maintaining peace within our communities, and preserving our own integrity. It allows us to build trust, foster healthy relationships, and promote a culture of respect and empathy.

Similarly, doing good to others creates a positive impact on society. It spreads kindness, compassion, and love, fostering a sense of unity and harmony among people. It brings joy and happiness to those in need, strengthens the bonds of brotherhood, and earns the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed an unparalleled knowledge and understanding of the Quran. His profound wisdom and exemplary character serve as a guiding light for Muslims of all generations. By practicing the virtues mentioned in this Hadith, we can strive to emulate the noble qualities of Imam Ali and fulfill our duty as believers.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of safeguarding our tongues and doing good to others. These virtues are deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran and hold immense significance in our personal and social lives. By embodying these virtues, we can contribute to the betterment of ourselves, our communities, and the world at large. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice these virtues and earn His pleasure.
