Hadith #5831

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

صَمْتٌ تُحْمَدُ عاقِبَتُهُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ كَلام تَذُمُّ مَغَبَّتُهُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the virtue of silence and highlights its superiority over speaking ill of others. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (samtu) "صَمْتٌ" translates to "silence" or "quietness." It refers to refraining from speaking, especially in situations where one's words may lead to negative consequences. Silence can be a powerful tool, as it allows one to avoid unnecessary conflicts, misunderstandings, and hurtful speech. It is a quality that requires self-control and wisdom.

The phrase (tuḥmadu ʿāqibatuhu) "تُحْمَدُ عاقِبَتُهُ" means

its result is praised.

This implies that the outcome of silence is commendable and praiseworthy. When we choose to remain silent instead of engaging in harmful speech, we preserve peace, harmony, and the dignity of others. Our silence can prevent misunderstandings, maintain relationships, and promote a positive atmosphere.

On the other hand, the phrase (kalām taḏummu maghabbatuhu) "كَلام تَذُمُّ مَغَبَّتُهُ" translates to

speech whose consequence is dispraised.

This refers to words that are filled with criticism, backbiting, slander, or any form of harmful speech. Such speech not only damages relationships but also tarnishes the reputation and honor of individuals. It leads to resentment, animosity, and a negative environment.

The Quran provides us with guidance on the importance of silence and the consequences of harmful speech. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking in a manner that is good and beneficial. By choosing silence over harmful speech, we protect ourselves from the whispers of Satan and maintain unity among believers.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse highlights the prohibition of backbiting and negative assumptions. It reminds us of the severe consequences of speaking ill of others and encourages us to refrain from such behavior.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the value of silence and the importance of guarding our tongues. By choosing silence, we can avoid causing harm to ourselves and others. It allows us to maintain peace, preserve relationships, and uphold the principles of Islam. Our silence can be a source of strength and wisdom, reflecting the knowledge and understanding that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed.
